“I want to tell you about a hobby of mine”.

The purpose of this record is succinctly described in the album title itself “Sound”. In my music I am always striving to create an interesting tapestry of sound in its various forms, and this is exactly what I set out to achieve in this record, but this time with more intricacy and what can only best be described as “fire power”.

Starting with the explosive onslaught of sound with the opening track “Punch and Crunch”, this record meanders its way through various styles of music of varying intensity, culminating in the epic 11.5 minute progressive rock cacophony that is the record’s title track – “Sound”.

The focus of this record was less about the technical wizardry of my guitar playing and more about the overall ensemble of sound created with each instrument. Through varying levels of arrangement complexity, this record has achieved what I hope is an interesting weave of colourful sound, emotion, passion and lust for musical expression. That said, I did succumb to my urges of showing off with the ridiculous shred number “Vainglory” is purely about self-indulgent shred playing, hence its title.

This record has taken a while to realise for several reasons. Firstly, my desire to perfect each composition meant that I spent a great deal of time working on each song and constantly refining it until I achieved what I set out to do. Secondly, during the creation of this record I decided to re-record my first album “Heroism: The Annals of 2006” for digital release. Thirdly, my plan to have a live drummer on this record fell through and I was forced to find an alternative – which I found in the incredibly powerful Logic Pro 9 software that I ultimately completed the project in. Lastly, there was a considerable period of time where I had no studio setup because of the move into the newly-built RG Musicom recording studio that was completed in mid-2010.

I’m extremely proud of the whole record and the whole production process from composition to mastering was incredibly fulfilling. I’m proud of my playing on this record, which I feel marks a plateau of musical prowess for me. However, I’m particularly proud of the overall production and composition, and the general quality of the recording when compared to my previous efforts.

As always, I’m completely indebted to my wonderful family – without whom I’d never have started playing a musical instrument, let alone be recording and releasing albums of my own music. I would be nothing without their support and strength.

I’m also extremely grateful to my great and loyal friends who believe in me and help me back on my feet along this difficult and undulating path.

All that remains to be said is that as always I hope you enjoy this musical offering, and remind you to listen to it in stereo where its fullest impact will be felt.

Until a little later,

Rich.
