Details:
Brisbane five piece The Bridge play folk rock with a strong celtic flavour, yet they''re rawer and more contemporary in their pre-occupations than this might suggest. The debut EP Riddle is uneven, but when vocalist Jo Ramsey balances anger and smoothness - as in Sick of Love - it''s quite arresting

Bio:
At 1 am on a Saturday morning in 1989, Ken, sister Robina, violinist Jo and some other friends decided to have a jam. They set up amps in their Brisbane living room and started playing. A little piece of musical magic flowed and a song Heaven was written on the spot. Everyone was too wrapped in the purity of the moment to know it, but that morning a band was born. A week later Ken tentatively brought another song to Robina and Jo and played it for them. The girls insisted on working out harmonies straight away. Again, with just an acoustic guitar and vocals, it flowed. "He''s There" (unrecorded) was completed in one sitting.

For the next few years with an acoustic guitar, a violin and three voices, The Bridge played and sang and wrote. Irregular public appearances brought constant requests for a recording, and so in 1992 the 12-track DarkPlaces and Daylight was produced.

"Due to a whole bunch of circumstances I had to do almost everything - even most of the singing. My voice just didn''t do justice to the variety of material on the album. Also, for songs that work best with very simple arrangements, the music was overproduced. But it was a great experience, and I learned a lot," Ken said.

It was three years before The Bridge entered the studio again, this time with new member Damian Gagliardi. After carefully choosing a studio and engineer, the 6-track EP Riddle was completed in a week.

"Riddle was a dream from start to finish," he said.

"It all just fell together. We knew we didn''t have the resources to do a big studio album, so we decided to go for a more ''live'' sound. Our music works best rough around the edges, and we wanted to capture the soul of it without drowning it in effects. The final product is buffed but not polished. There''s enough holes left in the production for some humanity to come through, and that''s what we wanted."
