Think again. What may sound like a bootleg of an impromptu jam session cut in a dusty Muscle Shoals studio between Johnny Winter, a young Joe Cocker, and one of Ry Cooder’s many projects is actually the debut album of San Marcos’ Adam Johnson. Johnson is basically a blues and soul enthusiast‘s vinyl collection personified; heartfelt and heartbroken, smooth yet fierce and raw. Only 18 years of age, Johnson already has several years (and several hundred shows) worth of stage experience, brimming with machismo energy and a knack for catching the eyes of all. Backed by the newly-dubbed Pay Me’s, an Austin rhythm section consisting of the Asylum Street Spanker’s Morgan Patrick Thompson (bass) and Mark Henne (drums), Johnson’s abilities finally made it to the studio for an album.
“I write songs about personal experiences as well as stories that have been passed on by others, to try and relate to the audience on a more personal level, to really draw them in to the songs and music we perform. I like to make it an experience all itself,” says Johnson. Despite the uncanny familiarity one may draw from Adam’s material, Johnson is not only a performer, but an exceptionally original songwriter, having penned well over 35 developed and structured songs in the past year, and dozens more over his career, and he sings the hell out of them. Wielding a rich, warm voice, punctuated with soulful, raspy growls and howls, Adam gets a lot out of his scrawny frame. Behind the microphone, he’s cobra-esque; fierce or seductive, puffing up larger than life, making you feel his songwriting through his voice. In addition, Johnson’s skills on guitar are most simply put as otherworldly.
Adam Johnson’s first outlet into the Texas music scene was through The All-In Blues Band (later known as Kings, Queens, & Lovers), a band he formed while in his first years of high school. A pyschedelic-blues trio, Johnson was backed by close friends Jacob Christian (bass) and Briane Willis (drums), touring Texas and playing venues such as Gruene Hall and Antone’s, topped off with an appearance at the Heart of Texas Blues Challenge, sponsored by the Austin Blues Society, where KQ&L were named semi-finalists. However, college came calling, and Johnson found himself a man without a band in November 2009, following a headlining appearance at the Waco Cultural Arts Festival. Following an official farewell show at their alma mater, Katherine Anne Porter School in Wimberley, Texas (an apparent haven for upcoming Texas musicians such as Sarah Jarosz and Sahara Smith), Adam joined forces with Justin Murray, the creative power behind New Braunfels’ Devil’s Hollow, to create Red Rooster Revue, a powerful blues-rock quartet. Despite a string of powerful shows and being heralded ‘Best Local Band’ by San Marcos’ newspaper, the Daily Record, Red Rooster Revue faded upon the release of Devil’s Hollow’s debut album, pulling away half the band on tour, and leaving Adam on the outside looking in once more.
Enter the Pay Me’s. Members of the nationally-lauded touring outfit the Asylum Street Spankers, Johnson debuted the band in March 2010 at the Steel Penny Pub in San Angelo (a college bar that watched Los Lonely Boys go from a local act to Grammy winners) and haven’t looked back. Despite nationally touring with the Spankers, the Pay Me’s still managed to put together an impressive run with Adam Johnson in their downtime. The band held a mini-residency at The Phoenix Saloon (a fledgling central Texas renovation by Mojo Magazine’s Ross Fortune), made festival appearances at the Endless Summer Blues Blast at Antone’s and the 3rd Annual 4th of July Jam at Sam’s Burger Joint in San Antonio, as well as a blistering set in the hometown heat of San Marcos’ 30th Annual Summerfest. With the late summer annoucement of the impending break-up of the Asylum Street Spankers, the Pay Me’s sat Adam down in their South Austin home and cut a debut record that won’t soon be forgotten. Recorded raw and in a week, the album is set to debut on March 29th, 2011. Featuring eight original compositions penned by Johnson and a bookended by covers of Magic Sam’s “She Belongs To Me” and Junior Kimbrough''s "Sad Days, Lonely Nights", the debut album displays Adam’s many abilities and diverse influences, including his slide guitar-work and mastery of the National steelbodied guitar on the acoustic track “Rainy Day Boogie”, of which the Pay Me’s get to show off their Spankers-style acoustic chops. Adam Johnson & The Pay Me''s will kick off their album release tour with dates supporting Alejandro Escovedo, Carolyn Wonderland, and Sonny Landreth in central Texas.
