Details:
Penny Dreadful’s Ghetto Dolls
Featuring Jimmy Starling (vocals), Mitch Suicide (guitars and backing vocals), Johnny Dread (bass and backing vocals, and Al Diablo (drums), Penny Dreadful wear their influences on their sleeves – the MC5, Dictators, Ramones, and Alice Cooper – blurring the line between punk and metal.
They offered a mission statement with their debut CD, Hymns From Helltown, replete with loud and snotty tunes played with a distinct dark leaning. With the release of their sophomore CD, Ghetto Dolls, Penny Dreadful offer their newest disc of macabre music just in time for the holidays – Halloween that is.
“Our band name is based on the British publication from the 19th century that usually featured lurid serial stories appearing in parts over a number of weeks, each part costing a penny,” explains Starling.
“Our songs are mini stories of a dark nature, and we better get paid more than a penny.”
“Penny Dreadful hails from Helltown,” reasons Dread. “We are the devil’s house band — and the devil loves to party. Helltown is a nickname we gave Hamilton, similar to the Hammer. Jimmy, Mitch and I
were involved in another project, Wamphyri, but when that band folded
the three of us started a writing project which evolved into Penny Dreadful.”
“Since the writing project was recorded using drum machines we decided to get a real drummer for the live show,” adds Suicide. “Al Diablo had a cool old school style that suited the new direction we were taking. With the addition of live drums we definitely have a proto punk sound with hints of metal, which adds darkness.”
Recorded live off the floor with producer Lee Kozarow – Ghetto Dolls
is quite rough but not outside the aesthetic. This is music that is meant to be raw and guttural and Penny Dreadful dishes it out plentiful.
With plans to document the band visually in more detail for a potential DVD release, Penny Dreadful is also reportedly gearing up to showcase for some major labels in the new year. For the time being, they are upon quite probably their favourite time of year and will spend their time wisely performing. The live show is as aggressive as the music and it takes a different kind of music fan.
“Yeah, we are crazy aggressive,” notes Dread on the live show. “We definitely have a cult following,” offers Suicide on their fans.
“Anyone who’s been through hell, tossed aside, picked on, a misfit – someone who can still be tough as nails and wear their heart on their
sleeve.”
“We want people to give us the ‘Dreadful Salute’,” says Starling.
“That’s your middle finger. Come to the show and show us your love, stick that middle finger right at us – we’ll salute you back. It’s a token gesture of proper attitude, it’s a talisman to ward off or invite evil, and between us, it’s a weird term of endearment. So come out to our show and give the Dreadful Salute.”
