Paul Kelly is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist living in Skerries, North County Dublin, Ireland. He has just launched his second solo album which was recorded in Los Angeles, California. Entitled, '' Re Enchantment '' the album is a collection of 11 original songs spanning a 15 year period of varied songwriting styles (Yep, it''s a slow burner!).The songs cover a broad sweep of themes from the political and satirical to the spiritual and humourous. Paul''s latest album was produced and arranged by US based Led Zepagain frontman, David Swan Montgomery.
Paul’s other works include the title song from a musical collaboration between the DIT Conservatory of Music in South Dublin and Fingal County Council. This album was co-produced in 2007 by Tommy Fleming’s musical arranger, David Hayes and the legendary traditional Irish guitarist, Steve Cooney. The album showcases 15 pieces from new and established Dublin musicians and songwriters, Paul was deeply humbled to have the production committee of this project choose his song Simple Philosophers as both the title track and name for the resulting album.
Paul''s own debut album, ‘ The Raven And The Longboat '' is a collection of 9 self-penned local history and character ballads and was released in 2003. This album, of which only a limited number of copies were produced, is now a collector''s item and still receives great critical acclaim from the musicians, singers and people of North Fingal. The album was funded by Fingal County Council Arts Department in their recognition of its cultural and historical value to the Fingal area.
Much of Paul’s inspiration for both his songs and poetry is derived from landscape and environment, encompassing his workplace and hometown. For 13 years now he has worked as a guide at the spectacular National Monument of Newgrange, County Meath, Ireland where the cross pollination of conversations and ideas with people from a wide diversity of world cultures and creeds has seeped unselfconsciously into his artistic vision as expressed through numerous songs on '' Re Enchantment '' . Likewise, Skerries town and its hinterlands have also proved to be a great source of inspiration for composition particularly in his earlier work.
Paul is a committee member of the Skerries Traditional Music Weekend festival, which over the last decade has established itself as one of the leading traditional music events on the east coast of Ireland. Over the years he has performed with many of the legends of traditional Irish music and song including Ben and Charlie Lennon, Mary Bergin, Paudie and Gerry O Connor, Niamh Parsons and Sean Mc Keon to mention but a few.
Though specialising in DADGAD open-tuned guitar, Paul is also a vocalist and plays the bass guitar, mandolin, uilleann pipes (C♯), keyboards and whistles.
