FOLK: Traditional Folk, LATIN: Brazilian Jazz

Details:
Salsa Summer - Music from Ireland and other Atlantic Shores by fiddler Mark Crickard and guitarist Jon Sanders features music and song from Brazil, Ireland, America, Scotland and Portugal. The title track gets its name from an original composition by Jon Sanders. Guesting on the album are Eilis Kennedy on vocals and Philip Crickard on jew''s harp and fiddle.

Famed for the intensity of their live performances, Mark and Jon form an intuitive partnership, bringing a soulful passion and reckless splendour to the music. "Stefan Grapelli summed it up when he said that Irish musicians can be included in the world of jazz because of their use of swing and improvisation", explain the duo.

Both musicians have a long-standing history in the acoustic music movement: Jon has spent the last 10 years developing a modal, percussive style which drives the music and which has been described as "quantum leaping" by Irish Times music critic Siobhan Long. He has travelled Europe, America and Australasia and performed with the likes of Mary Black, Steve Cooney, Vinnie Kilduff, Kila, Altan, Paddy Glackin and Seamus Begley. He is also recorded on Benny O''Carroll''s Sessions from the Hearth, Geantraí, An Droichead Beag''s Mighty Sessions, with German virtuoso violinist Tony Geiling, Tony Small''s Galway, Eilis Kennedy''s Time to Sail, Muireann McAuliffe (of Danú) on Morning Star and Eoin Duignan''s Ancient Rite. He produced and arranged Blasket island singers Áine Uí Laoithe and Eilín Ní Chearna''s critically acclaimed cd, Mná an Oileáin. He launched his world music cd, Latitudes, in April 2006 and is also available through CD Baby.

Mark has recorded previously with Parisian street band Dalriada, now sold as The Crickard Brothers; with Susan McKeown, John and Brian Doyle and Donogh Hennessy as The Chanting House; and again with Donogh on The Hurricane. In Portugal, he formed Irish pub band The Wingers with Joe Connolly and Liam Smythe, touring the country''s festivals extensively, opening for Billy Bragg at Lisbon''s Rock and Revolution festival and including as impromptu guest, singer Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam.

The two musicians toured New Zealand extensively in 2004 and aagain in 2006 as well as Ireland where they have featured in many concerts and tv appearances. This is what the critics said about them..

Jon Sanders & Mark Crickard - The Cobblestones: Dublin

West Kerry rarely enjoyed such tropical highs before. Kent guitarist Jon Sanders and Belfast fiddler Crickard has spent long years inhaling the infusions of Corca Dhuibhne, but here it was the rhythms and melodies of Portugal, Spain, north Africa and Brazil that shaped their session. Fiddle and guitar have long been cosy bedfellows in the tradition (witness Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill), but the Sanders/Crickard axis brings a whole new flavour to this particular duetting and duelling combo.
From the minute they kicked off with Rhumba Negra to their closing Wildlife Set (featuring The Swallows Tail, The Otter''s Den and The Bucks of Oranmore), Sanders and Crickard didn''t so much break boundaries, as blithely skip over them on their journey from Slea Head to Lisbon via Barcelona and Budapest, with a brief interlude outside the Four Courts.

From the opening chords, Crickard engaged in sotto voce communion with his fiddle, tucking not just his chin but somehow, his entire being inside its curvilinear frame. He fiddles with the intensity of a player who''s been lately reunited with an old acquaintance, engaging impishly in hiccupping two-toned couplets, while Sanders traces intricate pathways alongside him on Spanish guitar.

With their first album barely off the presses, they resisted all temptation to limit themselves to its decidedly fine repertoire, choosing instead to marry its exuberant title-track, Salsa Summer, with a goose-stepping Romanian borrowing, a vastly expansive meditation, King Size Blue (that would surely be right at home soundtracking Annie Proux''s Montana landscapes) and an angular evocation of dancing bears in Crickard''s tune titled, eh, Dancing Bears.

................................./
With Sanders choosing a found harmonium to colour and shade, and Crickard willing to forego any notions of genre in favour of a free-spirited meander across Atlantic shores, into northern Europe and beyond, this was a night for music that simply resists the fetters of the tradition, and at the same time, basks in all their glories.
Two musicians: original thinkers, bold explorers, refreshing co-conspirators on a journey from the foot of Mount Brandon to the peaks of Andalusia - and beyond.

Jon Sanders and Mark Crickard
Salsa Summer ***

Sub-titled "Music from Ireland and other Atlantic shores", Salsa Summer is a lot more than its modest title suggests. Casting a line towards Portugese, Brazilian, southern US and Donegal shores, guitarist Jon Sanders and fiddler Mark Crickard share an eclectic taste for the more sublime tunes to be found skirting the Atlantic. Crickard''s fiddle travels through the Brazilio-Portugese opener, Rumba Negra and the robust Donegal reel, The Nine Points of Roguery. Jon Sander''s intricate accompaniment is a delicate cross-stitch that demands repeated listening to appreciate its breadth and depth. Fellow west Kerry musician Eilís Kennedy lends faultless vocals too. This is a refreshingly original collection which, judging by their recent live performances, excels in 3D."

Review from Wellington Folk Club, gig Tuesday 6th April 2004.

"Jon Sanders should be cloned and a copy offered to every guitar https://www.tradebit.comk''s fiddle style is fluid, lovely, has more of a hint of Scottish in it, and together they''re a powerful combination." Sue Iken

Salsa Summer cd review from Radio Woodville, New Zealand.

"This is pure magic! A blending of Irish musical tradition with primarily Spanish and Latin stylings, it touches the soul with the welcome of gentle rain after a drought. It''s hard to pick any track as being particularly outstanding, but mention must be made of ''Poor Wayfaring Stranger'' featuring the vocals of Eilis Ni Chinneide, which has been especially popular with listeners on this station. The rest of the album is of equal calibre, superb playing, great melodies and a blance of styles and dynamics that will stand the test of time." Gayle Cresswell, Radio Woodville.

MAC SPY

Mark hails originally from Carrickfergus Northern Ireland and Jon from England. Both boys met and merged from being imports to Dingle in County Kerry, South Ireland. They independently settled there a pack of years ago and would have crossed paths in the mighty session circuit on more than a few occasions. Mark staying firmly at home on fiddle and has developed a very special reputation of being both a master fiddle player but also as one of traditional music''s true gentlemen. A very subtle sense of irony and humour and a very graceful player to watch.

Jon has studied and worked very devotedly on the guitar and bouzouki and after hearing him today I need not to be told that hard work and practice makes perfect!
Both Mark and Jon have been involved in other musical projects and recordings on their journey to "Salsa Summer" and this would have included rubbing shoulders on a regular basis with Steve Cooney, Mr Begley and the countless musicians who pass through Dingle on a regular basis. Mark always said he knew all he had to do was sit in Dingle long enough and every single musician in the country would share a tune with him at some stage!

The album states its "Music from Ireland and other Atlantic Shores" and with pieces entitles "Rumba Negra", "Salsa Summer" and the "Iberian Set" you can see the sort of voyage the boys take you on.

The show was a cross selection of tunes from the disc and also some other surprises thrown in. A lot of the work has been penned by the boys or as Mark modestly describes "here''s one I made up!".

The album has two guests, Philip Crickard brother of Mark on fiddle and jaws harp and beautiful vocals from Eilís Ní Chinneide. And this adds a different dimension to the album as a collection of finely worked arrangements and scores. On stage we only had the two boys and I say that only in that it would be nice to have had the luxury of hearing "Salsa Summer" with the guests, but I know only too well the complications let alone the financial problems of feeding four let alone two on the road.

The music was superb and the listeners were buzzing at the end of it. Mark and Jon then did that lovely thing of mixing with the crowd and signing albums and showing clearly how down to earth they are despite being awesome musicians. Watch out for them and the album, they are due to head off to New Zealand in February to tour the album extensively there and lets hope they return to the studio before too long to give us more of that sort of summer."

https://www.tradebit.com voted Salsa Summer probably the best in its monthly selection earlier in the year, the Melbourne newspaper The Age gave it 8 out of 10 etc..
You get the picture! Salsa refers to spice rather than the form of rhythm. 2 songs and 8 instrumentals including the self-penned Sasal Summer title track by Jon Sanders.
