Rhythmic Poet Spiritchild in some Detail

Hip-Hop activist Spiritchild of Mental Notes and the Artist & Activist Collective Movement In Motion was born in Harlem and raised in The South Bronx. Spirtchild discovered his passion for Hip-Hop music while in elementary school. It was there in the Bronx Public School 85, where he wrote his first Hip-Hop songs and had his first performances. Among his first compositions, co written and performed with his peers was ”Fire, Fire”, a fire prevention rap that won an award and was showcased at a national fire prevention convention in Manhattan.

While attending DeWitt Clinton High School also in the Bronx, Spiritchid formed his first group with fellow Hip-Hop loving peers. The group was called Mad 2 True and gained notoriety throughout the South Bronx by winning competition and performing at local festivals and talent showcases. The group received attention from record executives and was offered contracts to major record labels. While Supa Kris of Mad 2 True decided to sign to Juicee Entertainment (a Def Jam subsidiary at the time), Spiritchild decided to continue his pursuit of Hip-Hop as an independent artist gaining more experience.

After High School Spiritchild went on to pursue a degree in Mass Communication / Music at Lehman College in the Bronx. It was in Lehman College when Spiritchild learned the fundamentals of music theory and received experience in engineering at WHLC the local college radio station. During his college education he gained an interest in the business of music and became an ASCAP writer & publisher member and regularly attended their seminars where topics included Artist Management and The Business of Songwriting. Spiritchild also became employed by Arts Horizon, an agency that provided public schools with professional artist to teach children. He acquired a few years of experience working with children from grades 1 – 6, teaching them the fundamentals of music, writing and how to Rap.

While doing shows and auditions throughout the Lower East Side, Spiritchild formed Mental Notes a Hip-Hop Jam Band. The influence of the band consist of Jazz, Reggae, Latin, Rock, Electronica, Rhythm and Blues and Spoken Word elements which became the creation of the Universal Hip-Hop Evolution (X-Spirit-Mental Music). Mental Notes has gained a reputation as a new innovative sound throughout the New York City Night Club Scene and has performed at such legendary venues as CBGB’s, Knitting Factory, Bowery Poetry Club, Nuyorican Poets Café and BAM Café.

For Spiritchild Mental Notes was not just a Hip-Hop Jam band that created music, it was an outlet for political expression. During the Anti-War Movement that was re-ignited after September 11, 2001, that outlet for Spiritchild intensified. After years of analyzing his role in the underground music scene he established Movement In Motion Artist & Activist Collective to become the creative drive in the struggle for peace, justice and social awareness.
Movement In Motion Arts Collective included film directors, musicians, poets, activist, dancers, organizers, artist and producers. They educate themselves and others every day about struggles for freedom, against attacks on free speech and civil liberties, against imperialism and global hegemony, against police state violence on our streets and poverty in their communities, against high rent and no healthcare, and against the war of misinformation and deception that pervades corporate media. They have established themselves as a force in motion by bringing creative energy to National & Local Rallies utilizing Hip-Hop, the foundation of this collective to stimulate and mobilize the youth and their peers. Their main mission is dissemination of information through cultural mediums.

Spiritchild strongly believes in the energy and vibration of music especially Hip-Hop and its influence on our children today. He has made himself available to provide community service through Mental Notes with Movement In Motion Artist & Activist Collective to expose and educate the youth through Hip-Hop. “You must talk the talk, walk the walk in order to create dialogue. Hip-Hop is my dialogue. If you don’t speak the language of the people you are outreaching to, they aren’t hearing you.”

After Movement In Motion’s last international tour to Mumbai India. Spiritchild directed the collective to take more of a one on one hands on approach towards social change with the youth in 2004. He became a mentor and urged his collective members to do the same and advocate for “at risks youth” in the group homes and foster care system of ACS (administration for children’s services). After being a youth advocate for a few months he became Assistant Director of the New York City Youth Advocate Program (YAP) involving grassroots organizations such as Movement In Motion so that they can become official community linkages for social service agencies. While incorporating the strength based model of YAP, Spiritchild has succeeded in having Movement In Motion Artist Instruct High School Students, at his previous Junior School 143, on electives pertaining to hip hop for social change, creative writing / play wrights and graphic and web design. This program will run for a full school year and will be evaluated for continuation for the rest of the school year February 2006. He is also facilitating a after school hip hop club on Fridays, teaching the history of hip hop and skills development (writing, song structure, production, performance etc).

Spiritchild has committed and dedicated himself toward effective campaigning, winning realistic victories and creating something in communities that has never been done with such desire before. He is convinced that an Arts Program that provides children with the hands on experience of a university but with the love and support of a community will be that effective campaign that will win many victories.
