S&M is the lovechild of Spottiswoode & McMahon, a couple of New York beatniks.
They have performed S&M together here and there. Spottiswoode usually performs with a Spanish guitar while McMahon plucks, bangs and blows on this and that.
Cozy in the comfort of McMahon’s New Warsaw studio parlor in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, they invited some of their favorite musicians to perform S&M with them.
Paul Ossola (Buddy Guy, John Hiatt) brought his double bass
Todd Reynolds (Bang On A Can, Steve Reich, Joe Jackson) brought several dozen violins
Bruce Martin (Tom Tom Club, Wild Colonials) brought his tablas and bongos
Kenny White (Sean Colvin, solo maestro) brought a grand piano
Candace De Bartolo and Kevin Cordt (Spottiswoode & His Enemies) brought a sax and a trumpet
Trevor Exter brought a cello and some Portuguese
Many other talented and sexy folk shared instruments, accents and a good old-fashioned submissive sense of adventure
Spottiswoode arrived with a Polish kielbasa and a lot of tunes
McMahon pulled out all his toys and then turned on his microwave oven
The result?
An orgiastic smorgasbord of song. Stories of love, disillusionment, Ukrainians, Parisians, New Yorkers, Londoners, Scots, Cubans, Indians, Brazilians, children, parents, gypsies, and other more interesting stuff. A rich and seamless journey through women, continents and past lives….

While he is not performing S&M, Spottiswoode fronts the cult NYC band, Spottiswoode & His Enemies.
In addition to being one of Spottiswoode’s Enemies, Riley McMahon is one of the busiest musicians and producers in New York City.
