“lost locations” is the debut release from Trio Sangha, a Los Angeles based jazz trio which combines free improvisation with composed material to create a unique and innovative sound. This album is a product of a long-standing musical collaboration between Trio Sanga''s diverse members; pianist Dhiren Panikker, bassist Anthony Shadduck and drummers Bert Karl and Sean Macauley. Utilizing the youthful, technical and groove-based approach of Macauley and the free and textured aesthetic of Karl, create a distinct yet unified rhythmic framework for improvisation.
“lost locations” includes original compositions by pianist Dhiren Panikker, which represent diverse approaches to the jazz trio. A modern aesthetic can be heard on the title track, “lost locations,” with its dark and moody harmonies and floating melodies. Utilizing the broken-time of Karl, a humorous “Laundry Day” represents both the old and new in jazz. Finally, a new and vibrant rhythmic approach can be heard on the original compositions “Expatriate/Immigrant” and “Damaru,” which integrate Carnatic (South Indian Classical) rhythmic concepts with a jazz improvisational sense. “lost locations” also includes free interpretations of Nick Drake”s “Horn” and “Know,” two lesser known works by the cult pop icon. In addition, Trio Sangha pays homage to two important female composers of the 20th century; contrasting the dissonant beauty of Annette Peacocks “Touching” with the delicate lyricism of Cecilia Coleman’s “Beautiful.” Finally, Trio Sangha takes both straight-ahead and free-improvisational approaches to several jazz standards including “Alice in Wonderland” and” Israel.”
Combining original music with jazz standards and pop-covers, “lost locations” uncovers new sonic territories and potentials within the most tried and true ensembles of the jazz tradition.
