Details:
Even at a young age you can say that words came easily to Khrys Lawson. Born in San Jose, California, he began rapping at the age of six, and what started as simple poetry evolved to the lyricist you see today. Along with writing poetry as a way to express his inner emotions, Khrys would also get into freestyle battles in school, allowing him to fall more in love with hip hop. He transitioned from poetry to rapping so that someone could hear his voice and feel the emotions in his words.
Unlike many up and coming artists, the fame and the money is not what motivates Khrys to continue rapping. The rapper who now resides in Tracy, California, chose rapping as a form of therapy. It allowed him to vent and heal the pain he dealt with throughout his life. He hopes to soothe the listeners’ souls by speaking on topics male individuals would view as weak.
As a rising lyricist Khrys Lawson looks up to fellow California rapper, Tupac Shakur, for the uplifting messages within his music. He also looks up to lyricist Nas, for the way in which he structures his lyrics in an intelligent form. Nas’ form of writing causes listeners to look deep within the lyrics and research the words and ideas put forth, allowing them to think deeply. Khrys admires the complexity of Nas’ lyrics and subject matters. Lauryn Hill is also noted as being admirable for what she represents as an artist in the music industry.
Although he looks up to soul lyricists with their own distinctive sounds, Khrys would say that his sound is unlike anything anyone has heard before. When listening to “Missing You”, a single featuring T-Pain, you hear a romantic story in which he depicts missing and reminiscing over that special someone. His unique sound is well translated within his mixtapes; E&J Swisher, That Bay from the Bay, and The Morgue. You can also hear his music on his albums, “Bite Marks On My Swag”, released July 2008, and “Hip Hop Broke My Heart”, released August 2009.
In the end, Khrys Lawson dreams of success, greater than those that are already viewed as legends. “If you’re doing something you love, why wouldn’t you want to be remembered as being the greatest to ever do it?
