New Heirlooms is a Northern California folk collective, performing live as anywhere from a four- to a seven-piece band. The project was sparked in the summer of 2010, when Jesse Lee Miller’s (vocals, guitar) previous band, Missouri Mule, went into retirement. He recruited two of his former bandmates Jason Chase (drums) and Kyle Olson (guitar), as well as Marissa Moriel (of Olive Drive and Fellowette) on piano and vocals. Soon after, Zak Norlyn (bass), Ciera Martinez (cello) Kyle Carsillo (violin), and Dennis Brovald (percussion) joined in and completed the lineup.
Miller’s classical training can be heard in New Heirlooms’ odd chord structure and haunting arrangements, complimented by a vocal style and lyrics that parallel the group’s warm California roots. Moriel adds her sweet and soulful voice on top, and at times the whole band comes together to sing in tight, complex harmonies. New Heirlooms’ sound aligns with contemporary artists like Murder by Death, The Decemberists, Dark Dark Dark, and Other Lives, and the band cites Nick Cave and Ennio Morricone among its influences.
