I have been a United Methodist pastor in a local churches since 1974. Finding people not affiliated with the church because they didn''t care for "church music," and inviting them to share their own soul music is one of the most fun things I do.
Folk rock music for the church has always been a love of mine, not only because I could play it, but because many of the songs have a social justice theme.
In 1993 I started a new service in my church in Somerville, Massachusetts, driven by music. It was a sort of concert where a worship service breaks out. After a couple of weeks the band was at the end of it’s repertoire, and I had to start writing music in earnest. Three songs a week was not unusual. Drove the band crazy.
Here are some of the songs I wrote that seem to have staying power. Some are straight forward, and some have that quirky irony that folk rock delivers so well. I hope that they will be for you a witness to the wideness of God''s love and a call to stand with those in need.
Singers: in addition to myself, Donna Daley, is a music teacher in the public schools and a singer in her church choir.

Keyboard is covered by my wife, Patricia Deyton, teacher and non-profit manager, also perennial choir director, and the best congregational hymn player I have ever heard.
And yes, that’s me in the background sometimes with banjo, harmonica, and kazoo.
I am grateful to all who participated in making this album possible, including my wife Patricia and dear friend Art Kaufman, who threatened to drag me kicking and screaming to Nashville if I did not get it together locally. And to Art’s son Dan Kaufman, who set up the Web Site.

5. Take Me To The River
Letting go of the past, being cleansed, such a beautiful thing. I imagine the exiles felt that way as they returned to Jerusalem. What we do with our new life is a new challenge.
6. Full Salvation Candy Store
People talk about “full” salvation. I think that they are implying other branches of the church are deficient. When people
praise God, feed the hungry, and work for peace, I feel how much salvation they have is none of my business.
7. Higher Ground
The title is borrowed from the old gospel song I grew up with. Rev. Robert Oatman, Jr. and Chas H Gabriel, Copyright 1898 by Howard Entwisle. Been to any mountaintops lately?
8. I Thought I Saw You (Among The Least of These)
There is an old liturgy that urges us to pray for the “deserving” poor, as if God wouldn’t want to give help to the undeserving. Matthew 25 makes no such distinction.
9. Apocalypse Waltz
What a vision at the end of the Bible! A city with water, food, and light. No more war. A full sense of God’s presence Revelation 21,21
10. Out Of Town
In the Bible, geographical journeys are also spiritual journeys. Sometimes to get your spiritual direction, you gotta get outta town! (And this song is a 12 bar blues, perhaps the only church 12 bar blues song in all captivity. That’s a low down, dirty shame.
11. What Remains?
St. Augustine’s Confessions has a meditation on the origin and final goal of time. I thought it deserved a musical setting.
