Who Is Grizzly Rose?
Miwa Gemini met Grizzly Rose while traveling alone in the desert among the Joshua Trees. Grizzly Rose is intimidating, a mystery, some even suspect sheʼs a murderer; but to Miwa, itʼs her combination of fearlessness, flourish and breezy glamour that make Grizzly Rose a worthy focus for her latest album.
Of course it isnʼt all Grizzly Roseʼs doing. Miwa Gemini embodies all of Grizzly Roseʼs qualities, combining a classical music education as a child in Japan to a creative aesthetic she developed studying art in New York City, now her home.
Miwaʼs repertoire combines folk-infused lullabies with balmy nocturnes and the melancholy of a dust-bowl carnival. Her unique voice pairs wonderfully with the distinctive talents of Aaron Burns (accordion/glockenspiel), Matt Brundrett
(drums/percussion), and many others, all of whom join as collaborators in Miwa Geminiʼs vision, which is at once natural and other-worldly.
It was not Miwa''s intention to make her third album a "concept" album much less about her imaginary friend Grizzly Rose. However as the recording process progressed, it has become clearer and louder that Grizzly Rose has lots to share.
Miwa expands her sonic palette on The Fantastic Lies of Grizzly Rose. The opening track "Goodnight Trail" could be a perfect theme song for James Bond films if he was a cowboy; “Matchbox House Blues” and “Carroll Street,” employ a
complex orchestration of nontraditional instruments; “Troubling Waltz,” transports the listener to a carousel; and adopting a third language, French, the closing track "Chanson" is a moving elegant ballad.
