Details:
Knocking Down Castles is an album of all original lyrical and musical material by acoustic artist/ singer-songwriter Matt Rome. These songs have culminated based on years of an ever-expanding love for music of all types, shapes, and sounds, personal life experiences (good, bad, and everything in between those poles), and a desire to connect with people through the medium of heartfelt songs that are comprised of solid musical and lyrical content.

Matt Rome was born and raised in the Chicago land Western suburbs – just about an hour outside of the Windy City. Circa Matt’s middle school years, he began to fall under the trance of his first love – music. It was at this time that Matt bought his first rock album, Boston’s epic self-titled debut, and heard the song he claims inspired him to start writing music himself – The Goo Goo Dolls “Name.”
“Once I heard Name it was all over. I immediately knew that composing and performing my own music was the self-expression outlet I had been searching for,” Matt recalls.
Soon after hearing “Name” on the radio for the first time, Matt discovered the U2 masterpiece album “The Joshua Tree” and his love affair with music was in full bloom. By eighth grade, Matt could play what he remembers to be “a handful of cover tunes” on the guitar while singing them simultaneously.
Once college rolled around, Matt was concentrating on honing his singer-songwriter skills and began performing his original music along with covers at local venues in Southern Wisconsin. Matt was joined by close friend and classmate Mike McDonnell, who would serve as percussionist– the duo called themselves The Better Half. The vast majority of the songs featured on Matt’s first full-length all-acoustic album “Knocking Down Castles” were written during this time period, Matt’s undergraduate days.
Matt notes that “the songs are honest and stripped down - one rhythm guitar with the occasional lead part and one vocal track per song. I want the song writing to speak for itself in a kind of stand-alone fashion – devoid of any unnecessary digital enhancements, bells, or whistles. It’s nothing fancy, and it’s straight to the point.”
Matt’s sound has been described as “acoustic pop rock” by many of those who have heard the original tunes. Think John Mayer meets the Goo Goo Dolls.
Matt still resides in the Chicago land area and even though he is putting the finishing touches on his graduate school career, he still finds time for his music. He mainly plays local spots of smaller size conducive to acoustic music – both as an opening act and a headliner. It is not uncommon for Matt to perform with his buddy Mike McDonnell in their two-man band “The Better Half” in other parts of the Midwest and Southern U.S. as well, areas such as Wisconsin, Iowa, and Georgia.
In closing, Matt is incredibly thankful for the opportunity to make a CD of all original material come to life and would like to express the deepest appreciation to all of those people who supported him and continue to support him in his creative endeavors.
