Marybeth D’Amico is known for telling dark stories with her music. But the release of her second album finds the American singer-songwriter taking a more personal look at the forces of darkness and light. The 12 songs on The Light Inside demonstrate not only a step forward in her songwriting, but also a willingness to explore her own struggles to connect with the audience.

“A good song needs to go beyond navel-gazing, enabling listeners to bring their own experience to the subject matter,” says Marybeth. “But it also needs a great melody!”

The Light Inside moves farther out of the realm of country-folk towards an edgier sound. As on her debut, Heaven, Hell Sin & Redemption, Austin-based producer Bradley Kopp (Iain Matthews, Eliza Gilkyson, Jimmie Dale Gilmore) has brought together world-class musicians to accompany Marybeth. The album features Paul Pearcy (The Dixie Chicks, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Willie Nelson) on drums, Glenn Fukunaga (Bob Dylan, Joe Ely, Alejandro Escovedo) on bass, David Webb (Jerry Jeff Walker, Jimmy La Fave, Eric Taylor) on keyboards, and Mark Hallman (Carole King, Iain Matthews, Dan Fogelberg) on mandolin, mandola and bouzouki. Kopp himself adds accompaniment on acoustic and electric guitars.

The evolution in sound comes from the material itself. “When we first went into the studio, we anticipated making another folky, rootsy album,” says Kopp. “But I found myself frequently picking up the electric guitar. The result has been a grittier, more rocking sound.” Songs such as “Inside Out”, “Don’t Look Back” and “Der Grenzer” reflect this approach, while ballads including “Tiny Star” and “Star-Crossed” hint at the kind of accompaniment that can be found on Led Zeppelin''s acoustic material, Kopp says.

Marybeth’s 2008 debut drew critical praise on both sides of the Atlantic, launching at #10 in the Euro Americana Charts and chosen as a top DIY pick in Performing Songwriter magazine. BBC 2 DJ Bob Harris, called her songs “extraordinary” and Marybeth played a live session on Bob’s show in 2010. She has toured extensively in the U.K., Holland and Germany, sharing stages along the way with Antje Duvekot, Meg Hutchinson, Natalia Zuckerman, Jeffrey Foucault, Amanda Shires & Rod Picott, Rachel Harrington and Michael Weston King. The Light Inside is being released on LongMan Records of the UK and Marybeth will be back touring in the UK, Continental Europe and the U.S. to promote her latest effort.
