Details:
Slowtrain is the project of Austin based musician Adoniram Lipton.

The band counts among their prime influences The Band, Otis Redding, Joe Cocker, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan. This album, Bound To Find You Out, was recorded in three different sessions in and around Austin, TX throughout 2007 and 2008.

The release of this record has been held up over a period of three years by contractual disputes, depression, and divorce. Things became so bad that Lipton even slept in the band’s rehearsal space for a period of time while the ownership of the master recordings was disputed as part of protracted divorce proceedings. For refuge, he turned to the role of sideman, traveling North America as a keyboard player for hire while the album remained inaccessible in Austin.

With those trials in the past and the band reformed and stronger than ever, Slowtrain is very proud to be able to show this labor of love to the world.

The basic tracks heard here (drums, electric guitar, bass, piano, some vocals) were cut live in the studio in San Marcos’ famed Fire Station Studios. Lipton and the band put themselves through 8 consecutive days of 14 hour sessions in order to capture the spontaneity and wildness of their live shows while at the same time representing some of the intricacies possible from careful arrangement of the songs. The idea was to take a rock solid band, mix in a high dose of extreme sleep deprivation, and watch the results play out.

The next phase of recording took a more sober approach. Lipton and guitar player Andrew Keating borrowed the home of a friend deep in the woods of the Texas hill country, set up some recording equipment, and began the process of fleshing out the tracks. It was in this ramshackle cedar A-frame home that Lipton and Keating added the swirling organ parts and layered guitars that make up much of this album’s sound.

The rough mixes of this concoction caught the ear of Austin based producer Mark Addison (Sara Hickman, Jeff Klein, Ian Moore, Will Sexton), proprietor of The Aerie Studios in Austin. Mark offered the band the time and expertise that they needed to refine the work of the first two sessions into something approaching a cohesive whole. It was in Mark’s hilltop studio, looking out the window at the sun setting on the city of Austin, that Lipton recorded the vocals for many of the tracks heard on this record.

The songwriting heard here was heavily influenced by Lipton’s interest in the lyrical style of bluesman Son House. On songs like “Not The Only One”, “Bound To Find You Out”, and “Take Me Home” we see Lipton experimenting with the idea that manipulating the phrasing of a given lyric can drastically change it''s meaning. This is a theme across much of the record.

“Waiting Just For You” and “About You” reflect Lipton’s roots in gospel and folk music while “Beautiful Soul”, “Nobody Loves Me (Like You Do)”, and “Love Me Again” presage the unanticipated turmoil that was to come shortly after these tracks were first recorded.

In many songs, most notably “Just Like Cheever” which is one of four tracks which retained the original “live” vocal, you can hear the playful approach to music that marks the band’s live shows and was retained from those first marathon sessions in San Marcos.

Bound To Find You Out will be released on April 22nd, 2011 with a celebratory performance at the Continental Club in Austin, TX. In between appearances to support the record, the band will begin recording the album’s follow up beginning in June 2011.
