At many of the festivals Spikedrivers have played in the last eleven years they have often been asked to perform acoustic sets alongside their main stage performances. “Hangover sets” as bassist Constance Redgrave likes to call them. Inevitably someone, usually several , have come up and asked if this was available on record. Up until now the answer was no.
‘Front Porch Swing’ got its title because that is what it sounds like. Three musicians playing on the front porch and having a good time. The fact that the front porch was the Hawth Theatre in Crawley UK is neither here nor there. The band was there, the audience was there and so was the spirit. And sound engineer and co-producer Phill Brown was there to capture it.
Let’s get one thing straight. This is not another version of their first live album ‘Live at High Barn’. That’s the band in full-on big-stage mode and stands on its own. Nor is it one of those “unplugged” concerts where the band plays everything it would normally play but just a bit quieter. For this album they have added previously unrecorded material and gone over the arrangements and instrumentation with a fine toothcomb.
From the spine-tingling, virtually acapella, opener ‘You Got Move’ all the way through to the whispering fading chords of ‘No Expectations’ this is a masterclass in subtlety, inventiveness and musicality. Gorgeous bouncy grooves and slinky-smooth swing mix it with some righteous shuffles and down home boogie. And on top of that you get the vocals. Ben Tyzack’s is the main voice whether hammering out his version of ‘John Henry’ or the soulful self-penned ‘Guided By Spirits’. Constance Redgrave supplies Julie London wistfulness on her own composition ‘You Don’t Care’ while Maurice McElroy delivers JJ Cale’s ‘Clyde’ and his own ‘Goodbye Mr Blues’ in his own inimitable style. When all three come together it makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
