In the wake of last year’s Captain’s Log, Chicago band Honest Engines fine-tuned their dynamics with numerous performances expanding their intricate attention to detail into a fully fledged sonic landscape. The band has showcased new facets of sound on every release - a feature which remains with their forthcoming The French Song EP. Once again, the band members collectively display their evolving creative definition in stride.
Wielding their signature depth and maturity, Honest Engines take their talent for composing engaging songs from Captain’s Log and showcase it on The French Song EP. Although not intentionally banded together, the three songs housed on the EP fell into place naturally after a handful of summer sessions at Carterco Recordings. Moving towards a more complete sound captured by live tracking drums, bass, and guitar, the new EP is a departure from hard-nosed meticulousness and a stride towards an organic aesthetic which embraces the creative imperfections of playing live.
With this EP comes a reflective force, dishing out sentiments from someone “looking down the barrel at thirty, after twenty just felt like an infinite stretch ahead,” says singer Steven Mulcahy. Demonstrating purposeful movement, the divide after the opener “French Song” is bridged by a millennium-era synthesizer interlude, only to be followed by atmospheric, vocal bits flanking the back-end of “El Jardin.” Closing on an uplifting “Sunny Setting Sun,” which Mulcahy describes as a thematic odyssey of “coming to terms with who you are, and figuring out where you’re going,” Honest Engines have crafted a dynamic and emotionally-saturated release to add to an already tremendous catalog.
The French Song EP will be available on all major digital retailers, as well as limited edition handmade copies, May 3rd, 2011 via Tandem Shop.
