Details:
Born and raised in Imperial, Nebraska, Gary started performing at a very young age. “Mom used to dress up my sisters an me and have us sing at social functions. She would alter lyrics to popular songs to fit the occasion. These experiences left scars on my psyche.”

Growing up in a rural community had its advantages. “We used to take our shotguns to school so we could go hunting after class. One time we shot the car. When we were 16, shooting birds from a moving vehicle made perfectly good sense to us.”

Gary studied music at the University of Northern Colorado where he was featured on an album that was nominated for a Grammy. This was the second college group in Grammy history to be nominated for an award. Additionally, Gary was a finalist for the Elevox National Composition Contest.

After graduating, Gary moved to Denver where he continued to play and write music as well as seek gainful employment. He began teaching music in the public schools where he was awarded a $40,000 grant by the Kawai Music Corporation to implement his own music curriculum. While teaching, Gary attended the University of Denver College of Law where he graduated with honors

In 1998, Gary’s first musical, Before I Wake, was produced in Denver. After teaching music for 11 years, Gary became a dean of students at Cherry Creek High School.

He was asked to sing and play piano in the all Steely Dan band, Kid Charlemagne. “Pretending to be Donald Fagan was fun for awhile, but let’s face it… I’m from Nebraska.” The band was together for 12 years and there is talk of reunion concerts.

In 2003, Campaign, a musical that Gary co-wrote was chosen to do a workshop at the Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati. Campaign became The Ticket and was performed in 2006 as an equity showcase (16 shows) at the Sage Theatre in New York City. Gary is currently finishing writing the music for a musical written by Charles Kouri from Chicago. “I continue to have opportunities to write music, however, during the process of making High Plains Storm I found making music relating to my rural upbringing has brought me the most joy of anything I have ever done. I hope people can hear that in the music.”
