Gene Davenport began singing before the public and winning amateur contests when he was in junior high school. A performer and composer of cowboy western music for more than thirty years, he was an original member of and the arranger for OK Chorale, a western music quartet that performed at Silver Dollar City, at the Western Music Association Festival, and at other venues across the mid-South. He also was part of a trio that backed up Stan Corliss in Laughlin, Nevada, and has performed with Stan in other venues, as well. For several years, Gene performed most week-ends at the Old Country Store in the Casey Jones Village in Jackson, Tennessee, and continues to perform for private parties and to perform occasionally for public events. For seven years, Gene hosted a weekly program of cowboy western music over WTNV-FM, a radio station that reaches most of West Tennessee and areas of the adjoining states. As a lecturer on western music, western musical movies, the music of Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer, and western music harmony, Gene has appeared at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and at the WMA Festival, where he also has performed solo. For seven years, he was the editor of “Tumbleweed Times”, the official newsletter of Sons of the Pioneers, and he currently is working on a book of Bob Nolan’s song lyrics as poetry. CDBaby also distributes Gene’s CD “Ghost Towns and Autumn Trails”, and Cindy Walker said that his recording of her “Down in Old Matamoros” on that CD was her favorite performance of the song. Gene also composed, with not only the permission but also the appreciation of Bob Nolan’s daughter, the melody for Nolan’s “High Sierras” that is found on that CD.
