About the music. This CD was recorded in two sessions - one in late 2008 the other in July 2010. I really wanted to record some of my favourite tunes. These were mostly self penned tunes and arrangements or pieces by other people to which I have enhanced with my own additions. All these tunes are played on a nylon string guitar and recorded in single takes.
Bonne appetite!

Cinquante six I learnt this from a cassette years ago and never wrote it down. I’m not sure how true it is to the original. The repeating bass pattern grabbed me; this was a solution to playing bass and melody on the guitar that I found very appealing.
Funtashlich This is one of my favourite klezmer tunes. I first heard it played by the Klezmatics. I put this into standard Ali Farka-Toure tuning of FGCFAD and avoided drones as much as possible. The melody goes up with one set of notes and down with different set. It’s fun and exhausting to play.
Goydiatodam This is a celebration of festivals. I have put a lot of extra sections into this piece and I enjoy using it as a vehicle for improvisation.
Boyrei This rendition only uses a small section of the original Boyrei tune. Henry
makes an interesting job of this with his percussion.
Steady This is based on a repeating right hand arpeggio. I had Vinni Reilly’s music
in mind when I wrote it, I think it got lost somewhere.
Dawajuni I have the winter and the Fleet Foxes to thank for the additions I have
made to the original Dawajuni tune. Thanks to them.
Lammah badah This is an old tune of Muslim origin and the melody is ten beats
long. Sometimes I count it right.
Pizz I really enjoy the effect made by putting dampeners in the strings (in this case
rolled up toilet roll). I wanted to create a whole piece using this effect. This is a
kind of dance, if you have an extra leg.
Obiero This is a song Iyab Ogada wrote for his brother. I love it.
Pretty Peggy A lovely Irish tune.
Ederlezi This is an Eastern European tune made famous by Goran Bregovich.
Ederlezi is the name for a spring festival celebrated by Roma people in the Balkans
- the Gypsy name for the Serbian festival of https://www.tradebit.comrge celebrated on May 6th.
Meron Nign A tune from the Israeli town of Meron.
Happy 9 Originally called Happy Nign - a lovely tune played fast and just as good
slowed down.
