Alfred John’s newest album actually sheds much of the New Wave moves of the previous cuts and ventures into shoegazer territory. Shoegazer music was an offshoot of post-punk in the late 1980s and early 1990s that made little impression in America at the time, but acts such as early the Jesus & Mary Chain, Chapterhouse, and The Cocteau Twins took reverb-drenched guitars and slow, tripped-out rhythms into the drooling mouths of the music weeklies in the U.K. To further showcase how eclectic he is John may have left his heart in the ''80s, but at least he isn''t afraid to go back further in time to see if we''re still paying attention.

Nostalgic affection towards an earlier period of music can signal an absence of originality and imagination; however, in the case of Alfred John, it is more like a reawakening. John dusts off the ethereal, moonlit imagery of 4AD Records in their 1980s prime. That was when post-punk acts such as This Mortal Coil, the Cocteau Twins, and even Modern English (prior to "I Melt with You"), dabbled in otherworldly guitar textures, dreamy electronics, and hushed vocals.
