Details:
Coming off two critically and commercially successful albums with 2008’s Sleep Tonight and 2009’s The Walkaway, it seems a bit strange that Nashville based singer-songwriter Freddy Mullins would change anything up in his now comfortable musical formula. Yet with Live Like This, the new 6 song EP album, Mullins does just that as he seems to not be satisfied with simply staying put musically. And lets be honest, having that ambition in the face of an established musical acceptance has cost many artists that very acceptance. It’s a delicate recipe that can either produce progressive strides forward or a loss of focus and core strengths and, ultimately, a regression.

The album opens with the track, “Colorblind”, and immediately you get evidence that Mullins is not interested in taking you down a path he’s walked before. A catchy harpsichord melody rings out and leads into Mullins vocals being introduced in double track fashion ala Butch Vig to present the listener with a huge, wide listening landscape. As the second song, “Leaving You” begins, it’s obvious that Mullins has decided to let this EP album merge a measured dose of Pop into the musical mix which adds a new freshness and energy to his sound. His lyrics, which have always been an asset, also see changes as they move from traditionally non-threatening to just the converse with the opening two tracks of the album. As the album moves into the third track, “If You Forget”, a raw and beautifully captured song, we lose the sense of big production as you can hear the sniffs, sighs, and strums from Mullins in the obvious live tracking of the song. With “If You Forget” Mullins seems to reel us back into his traditional formula to make sure that the album doesn’t lose direction from an alienation of his core strengths, vocals and lyrics. The song shines the spotlight on those two completely, with just an acoustic guitar and light strings greeting us late in the track. Lyrically, this is the star of the album as the song opens with the line, “I’d climb a ladder of thorns to be with you rose..” and continues to preach the promises of love until a twist at the end sees the subject promise to forget himself if ever forgotten by his lover. The final three tracks walk the same line as the first three, two progressive songs, “In A World That You Built” and “Windows” and one grounded and raw, “Faded Letters”. Melodically, “In A World You Built” is the albums best and features another first for Mullins, vocal harmonies, and after hearing them it begs the question, "where have these been?" as they add such a dimension you''ll find yourself looking forward to hearing them kick in with each chorus. “Faded Letters” reaffirms Mullins lyrical craftsmanship and “Windows” completes the album with a sonic rich memoir reminiscent of Radiohead.

Live Like This proves to be a soft gamble that does pay off for Mullins. A progressively richer and more diverse listening experience with just enough anchor from a couple more traditional songs to keep fans of that style happy and accepting of the albums progressive pushes. The clever album art features a heart protected with bubble-wrap and every heart will be safe from disappointment with this album indeed.
