Details:
This is the second outing of Venezuelan vocalist, composer and arranger Fernando Alarcón. It has taken 7 years to finally reach the ears of a selected audience that discovered this wonderful musician back in 2002 with his album “Amor De Estrellas”, an album plenty of salsa music that was an excellent presentation card for this meticulous composer.

“Once De Octubre”, Spanish for October Eleventh, is Fernando’s collection of 14 songs that reveal not only the composer’s fine taste, but his often deep and seductive voice that finds the often love tragedy lyrics with the inevitable dancing sentiment that characterizes the genre. However, Fernando has taken interesting risks in various songs he mixes with the cante jondo found in flamenco and the subtleties of jazz.

The album starts off with Separados, a song that appears twice in the album. It first appears in salsa rhythm and later as a beautiful ballad with tinges of jazz. The song is followed by “Cayena De Marfíl”, where the composer engages in a duet with former schoolmate and one of Venezuela’s most prominent salsa composer and percussionist, José Alfonso Quiñones.

The album also offers some surprises. The classic Compadre Pedro Juan by Luis Alberti finds its counterpart here in the song Comadre Petra Juana. Most surprisingly is the song “Soledad”, a tune that finds Fernando singing in a more Venezuelan traditional mood. The song presents mandolin player Jorge Torres and evokes the passages of his native land.

Another nice surprise is his duet with flamenco singer Goyo Reyna in “Venezuela”, the other double versioned tune in this album. The handclaps and the guitar evoke the old continent and the unavoidable Spanish influence. This song and the whole album do not offer just danceable rhythms, as one can find very enjoyable and pleasant tunes like this one. There are also his thrilling collaborations with world class musicians like pianist Otmaro Ruíz, sax players Rodolfo Reyes and Pablo Gil, and percussionist Nené Quintero, all from Venezuela.

The title track is an instrumental tune that features solos by pianist Edepson González and trombonist Johan Muñoz. The song has a Latin jazz feel to it while keeping a danceable mood. The orchestra flows with natural ease as the occasional electric piano passages come and go.

Once de Octubre is a great work and a long awaited one since Fernando seems to take his time without being pressured by the usual demands of record labels.
