The tunes on SHAKER’s debut cd grew out of the interests and experiences of the band’s members. Anchored by the innovative original compositions of drummer SAI GHOSE, Shaker’s music also includes songwriting contributions by trumpeter ERIC HANSON and bassist ROBERT PUCCIARIELLO as well as ear-catching cover tunes, selected from the lesser-known archives of classic and progressive rock.
The album’s opening song, Ghose’s Underneath, lays down an infectious groove that is adorned by a bouncing trumpet and guitar line and interrupted by a driving swing interlude before returning to the groove and some inspired solos. Next is Sea Monster, another Ghose original, which begins with a repeated odd-meter figure that fades away to reveal a dreamy and elegiac trumpet line with a churning funky beat beneath.
The recording continues with the frenetically-paced but cooly-rendered Road Map, another Ghose composition. The first cover on the album follows -- Sting and The Police’s Shadows In The Rain, a haunting and hallucinatory song given understated treatment by Ghose, Hanson and Pucciariello, who allow the tune ample space to breathe.
Next is an homage to that unmistakable patch of grass between the sidewalk and street, Tree Lawn. Finding this term native (and exclusive) to their hometown of Shaker Hts., Ohio, Ghose and Hanson chose it as the name chose it as the name for their production company, and as the name for this song, written by Ghose, an uptempo groove tune highlighted by an extended guitar solo by guest MARK JODICE.
The sixth tune on the album, Thought She Was Sweet, refers to its own dual nature, which calls to mind the disillusionment one feels when encountering someone (OK, a woman) who turns out not to be the sweetie she seemed to be. A Ghose/Hanson collaboration originally entitled “Sweet & Nasty,” the first (sweet) part is a laid-back loop of the trumpet''s melodic line with funky stop-and-start accompaniment from the bass and drums. The "nasty" section is heralded by a recognizable Jethro Tull musical quote. Its reggae feel is the context for a slow burn that frequently ignites as Jodice and Hanson take solos.
The hypnotic groove of The Silver Surfer is based on a deceptively simple six-note figure that serves as a springboard for explorations by both Jodice and Ghose. Road Kill combines a Western/cowboy-sounding theme with a New Orleans march feel that is driving and pleasantly dirty. Next is a funk take on Led Zeppelin''s The Ocean, where John Bonham''s massive wall of sound is transformed into a lean funk vehicle sandwiched between an Afro-Cuban intro and outro.
Pucciariello''s compositional contribution Dukati is next-to-last in the cd''s track listing. Short but sweet, it''s syncopated melodic lines mesh smoothly with the anchoring bass line and propulsive drumming. The album''s final piece is the tour de force medley Godzilla''s Rush With Fame. Between the musical bookends of the intro to Rush’s “YYZ” lies the powerful and brooding “Godzilla” by metal gods Blue Oyster Cult as well as the funky David Bowie classic “Fame.”

The strength of SHAKER’s musical project begins with its members’ shared roots -- drummer Sai Ghose and trumpeter Eric Hanson were childhood neighbors in Cleveland and Hanson and bassist Robert Pucciariello were college buddies way back in the 80s.
Guitarist JOSE ALLENDE was born in Lima, Peru and began playing the guitar at the age of eight. He attended the Kodally Conservatory in Peru and has also studied privately with Eloy LaRocha, Andres Prado, David Doruzka, Jon Damian, and Danilo Perez. He has taught music in Lima-Peru, Chicago, Houston, Connecticut and Boston. In Peru, he has been a featured performer at the Heineken Jazz Festival and the Jazz in Lima festivals and performed with Cesar Lescano, Agustin Rojas, Javier Perez-Sacco, Carlos Espinoza, Alexix Tamayo, Gabriel Alegria, Eli Degibri, Pamela Rodriguez Arnais, Matt Wigton, Carolina Araoz, and Laura Robles.
In Boston, he has performed with Alexei Tsiganov, Joe Weinberg, Jorge Roeder, Jorge Perez-Albela, Renato Malavasi, Dan Blake, Sofia Koutsovitis, Taunia Soderquist and at venues such as the Zeitgeist Gallery, Mechanics Hall, the Bostonian Hotel, and Remington''s.
He is a versatile guitarist, arranger, teacher and composer who explores different rhythms, odd meters, concepts and spirituality inside the music and always adds his Latin and South American roots. The newest member of SHAKER, Allende is the first full-time guitarist in the band and bring with him a wealth of experience and energy.

In his thirty years with the trumpet, ERIC HANSON has played everything from backyard barbecues to the Haydn trumpet concerto. His early interest in heavy metal took a while to find a place in his playing. Jazz, a later love, found an easier home in his horn -- his work with the New York City combo Quel Jazz Quartet was heard at such notable haunts as the 55 Bar. Known also for his work as an agent, Hanson has represented artists as diverse as Nina Simone, Pat Metheny and Wynton Marsalis.
Born and raised in Shaker Heights, Ohio around the corner from SHAKER drummer Sai Ghose, Hanson attended Williams College in Williamstown, MA where he studied French and English literature and later received a M.A. in African-American Studies from Yale University. Hanson lives in Brookline, MA with his wife Amanda and daughters Louisa and Alexa. His melody lines and punctuation-filled solos give a distinctive flavor to SHAKER''s sound.
Robert Pucciariello has a long association with the bass, beginning with symphonic work with all-star youth orchestras in his native Long Island and continuing with the most modern styles of the electric bass. Work with numerous New York City rock outfits in the early ''90s led to his extended tenure with the Pink Floyd tribute band Pink Flawd. In his spare time, he heads a nanotechnology company in Cambridge, MA, where he lives with his fiancé Maria.
A native of Sea Cliff, NY, Pucciarello was a music and classics double major at Williams College and had a successful career in foreign currency trading prior to joining SHAKER. His considerable rock chops and his jazz and funk sensibilities make his playing the perfect anchor for the musical flights of the band.

Drummer Sai Ghose is a multi-talented instrumentalist and composer. Born and raised on the same mean streets of Shaker Heights as Hanson, Ghose began his musical career as a drummer playing in funk and fusion projects at a young age. Influenced by monster drummers such as Lenny White, Dennis Chambers and the Funkadelic Drummers, Ghose has quickly developed a strong reputation as a session player and sideman.
The jazz groups he leads as a pianist have performed on world-class stages from Yoshi’s in Oakland to Sculler’s, closer to home in Boston. His four recordings on Summit Records have received strong reviews in publications like JazzTimes, https://www.tradebit.com, and others as well as getting national radio play-all making the top 50 chart. His tunes continue to be played on jazz stations across the country and are part of several syndicated programs.
Ghose’s compositions have won strong praise from reviewers and he was awarded a Massachusetts Cultural Council grant for four of his compositions from "Fingers and Toes." He also won a gold medal for "Music in a Short Film" at the Park City Music Festival. Ghose brings his groove-laying magic, keyboard sensibilities and compositional chops to SHAKER’S debut release.
