Being the first artist releasing on Itsadogs World Records, Selfmeyi is gearing up to take the music scene by storm. At age24, the Detroit native strives to convey a strong sense of individuality in today''s monotonous world of Hip Hop. Hailing from a mixed background of urban and suburban life, the artistically inclined and moderately conscious rapper uses a "both sides of the fence" sort of approach with his music. Fusing Hip Hop, alternative rock, and a pinch of classical music to form his unique sound. Selfmeyi uses thought provoking rhymes and entertaining tales of overcoming and appreciation of one''s self-worth. With his choice lyrics, extreme versatility, and infectious hook writing ability Selfmeyi is poised and destined to be among Hip Hop''s juggernauts.
DaMar Jackson (Selfmeyi) first discovered he had talent with writing rhymes after he wrote an English assignment in the form of a rap in fifth grade. From that point he began developing his skill, rapping on a regular basis about his life and other interest. By the time he was in high school, DaMar became known amongst his peers as "that kid with mad flow". But it wasn''t until his 11th grade talent show that he realized he wanted to pursue a career rapping in the Hip Hop Industry. He and a close friend completed a demo and began to pursue a deal as a duo. Slight success came when the two were on the brink of landing a production deal with 2000 Watts and Relativity Records. Unfortunately the deal never manifested due to label complications. With his incomparable drive, DaMar decided to work even harder at his dream of superstardom. The decision was made to turn the duo to a four-man group called the Boogie Knights. During his time with the Boogie knights he performed in the Electric Kringle Jingle (featuring such artists as Jay-Z and Craig David), the Caribbean Festival held in downtown Detroit and a variety of local clubs. Before they were able to hit the stratosphere, the group broke up. This left DaMar at yet another stand still. But all his life he''s been the type that when his mind is set on accomplishing something, he attacks it with unbelievable persistence. So with that determination to succeed, the vital decision was made to become a solo artist and make his dream come to pass by himself, hence Selfmeyi was spawned.
Selfmeyi is due to release his debut album in the first quarter of 2005. In addition to spending hours in the studio, Self continues to perform in Detroit''s most prominent venues. His most notable performances as a solo artist include Who Wants To Be A Star, a local miniseries, and winning the Sunkist Sun Lab Contest. Understanding that the road to success is rough and very challenging, he relies on his God given strength and perseverance to not accept failure as an option.
