"PLASTIC MACHINE MUSIC" is the latest CD by keyboard innovator Greg Pagel. A jazz virtuoso, Greg has shared the stage with such legends as Benny Golson, Kenny Wheeler, Luciana Souza and Cecil McBee.
It was not until recently, however, that Greg has begun to express himself through music that showcases his deep appreciation of rock-and-roll and hip-hop. After several recordings as a versatile pianist in jazz ensembles, chamber music, and a solo piano CD, Pagel has released "PLASTIC MACHINE MUSIC", a set of well-crafted compositions in the electronic idiom.
While rooted in the improvisatory language of free jazz and the wide timbral spectrum of classical New Music, "PLASTIC MACHINE MUSIC" shamelessly employs fat hip-hop loops, distorted hardcore metal riffs and quirky techno samples.
Acoustic and electric piano, vintage Casio keyboards, accordion, dulcimer, ocarina, toy drums and lots of other noise-makers are electronically twisted and disfigured into a unique aural sculpture truly beyond category. Witty, colorful, and full of surprises, "PLASTIC MACHINE MUSIC" may be the most fun you''ll get from a CD this year.
Cameo appearances by Andy Pagel on guitar and Laura Osborn on flute.
