Plan C was born in early 2002 from the musical imagination of Juan Carlos Valencia, a classically trained, musically hungry young artist from Bogota, Colombia. In Plan C''s repertoire afro-Latino rhythms find themselves mixing with contemporary musical styles such as jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop and electronica. An experimental excursion into Alternative-Latin music that worshipped at the temples of Manu Chao and Ozomatli but with a more organic funk sound. The pulsating beats and infectious rhythms began to garner a steady buzz and soon Plan C would be playing some of the hottest clubs in the city of Toronto including Lula Lounge and Bambu by the Lake.
In the summer of 2003, Plan C''s first EP - ''ElectroLatinoAlternativo'' - was released and the single ''Penas'' brought the group into the campus radio charts for the first time. A smooth collection of tracks that represented the full potential of Plan C. Afro-Latin rhythms bounced over bumping house beats and funk arrangements. The buzz became pure electricity and shortly after Plan C was playing festivals and shows across Ontario, including very important appearances at the Fresh Festival at Harbourfront and the first ever Canadian version of the Latin Alternative Music Conference where they played to the applause of several industry insiders.
In March of 2003, Plan C was nominated and won the first ever Canadian Music Week''s Indie award for the Best Latin Alternative Group in Canada. This award led to another series of powerhouse shows at the Toronto Street Festival, Ritmo y Color, Fiesta Del Sol festival in London, Ontario and the Distillery Jazz Festival. This series was capped with a nomination from the Latino community for a Latin American Achievement Awards held at Roy Thompson Hall.
Plan C followed this incredible first run of success with 6 solid months in the studio which ended up producing their first independent full-length album ''Tercer Mundo''. The album was a product of Valencia''s dreams. A hot mix of Afro-Latin groove with all the other musical styles that had influenced Valencia since his first arrival to Toronto. A series of songs that would push the boundaries of the original EP by creating hypnotic sounds that could send any crowd into a hip-shaking furry. The album also represents the incredible line-up of multicultural musicians brought together to form the group.
Plan C is the perfect example of our very own Canadian Culture, where many cultures meet to create something always fresh and unique. Plan C resides within a variety of cultural backgrounds (Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Mexico, England, France and Canada), joining together to create soulful harmony. In three short years, Plan C has positioned themselves to be one of the most interesting Alter-Latino groups in the scene today with a balanced mix of heartfelt truths and hot music for any dance floor. By representing multiple cultures but one single mentality - Plan C is the perfect rendering of where music is headed. By creating the soundtrack for the globalization generation and by speaking honestly of the realities of the third world, Plan C has started to pave the way for the next generation of global rhythms.
