I was born in an ancient village in Southwestern Spain where singing and rapping Flamenco was part of every day life. Nobody thought that they had to be professional singers in order to sing. You just sung for the joy of singing. I still do it. Specially, in the shower. When I first came to the US, I could only say two words in English. Within six months, I taught myself how to read and speak the language, soon it became second nature to me. For many years now, I have been dreaming in English and singing my traditional Flamenco songs –in English- as the inspiration flows, under the warm shower water. Since I feel -my Flamenco- in English, it is my pleasure to share it with international audiences who might feel it and enjoy it too.
Flamenco is in its essence an oral tradition. Passed down from generation to generation, through the centuries, Flamenco lyrics contain a wide spectrum of expressions of the human experience. It allowed our ancestors, living under uncertain times and tough circumstances, to release their sorrows and share their joys. People who didn’t know how to read or write created simple –yet deep- lyrics, expressing their feelings and what they learned from the University of Life. New lyrics are always emerging in Spain because the people keep on expressing themselves through Flamenco songs. I make up Flamenco songs all the time, -just for fun- because I enjoy following the inspiration when it comes. I often surprise myself singing the traditional melodies with English lyrics. Boy, my grandmother Celedonia would have gotten a kick out of this!
Farrucas, Tangos, Sevillanas, Campanilleros, Tanguillos… Each one of these songs was recorded for the purpose of bringing benefit and inspiration to the international dancing community. Now dancers can enjoy a song that fits an exciting choreography. A perfect companion, as practice music, to the WorldDance New York Flamenco DVD series, the album also stands on its own as Flamenco music that one wants to hear over and over again.
