From Puerto Rico, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ireland and Korea by way of El Bronx, New York, Candela Soul’s musical journey incorporates a range of indigenous influences and styles – Afro-Cuban rhythms, Puerto Rican soneo, Colombian cumbia – alongside rock, pop, and the thoroughly modern, born-in-New-York syncretisms of salsa and hip-hop. The group has been inspired by world music legends like Bob Marley, Lila Downs, Cesaria Evora, Tite Curé Alonso, and Bebel Gilberto, along with iconic visual artists such as R.C. Gorman, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Georgia O’Keefe. Mix it all together and out comes a new, evocative sound. Hear the group’s stellar musicianship and the dramatic, mesmerizing vocals of la nueva diva, Lisa “Candela” Torres, and you’re transported to another time, another place…but still very much grounded wherever you are.
After issuing a debut EP in limited release in 2004, Candela Soul returned to the rehearsal studio, adding new elements and working through a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to carefully craft their second offering: a self-titled, self-produced album. A beautiful work of stunning sound, this visually compelling CD, Candela Soul, is like having a front-row ticket to one of their sublime live shows.
Candela Soul’s musical journey has taken them to many unforgettable places, and given them many wonderful experiences. The group has been blessed to perform at many notable venues in and around their hometown of New York City, such as the ever-popular CBGB; New York City’s hottest new club, Show NYC; the New Jersey Performing Arts Center; Sounds of Brazil (SOB’s); and Ashford & Simpson’s Sugar Bar. In the summer of 2006, Candela Soul performed at the Latin Alternative Music Conference, as well as in two Canadian world music festivals – Ritmo y Color at Harbourfront Center in Toronto, and Festival Nuits D’Afrique in Montreal – where they were warmly received by hosts and crowds alike. Their love, music and spirit flowed to new audiences, and Candela Soul is happy to report that the love flowed right back! Candela Soul’s song “Azúcar Lola” appears on the Festival Nuits D’Afrique 2006 compilation CD. Earlier this year, Candela Soul was introduced to audiences across the United States when the group appeared in a four-part series on Latin alternative music that aired on the renowned National Public Radio. Candela Soul went global when XM Satellite Radio featured a full hour of live performance and interviews with the group on its World Zone show “60 Minutes.”
Above all else, Candela Soul’s journey is a spiritual one. Creation and evolution. Reaching down deep within oneself to be able to give to others. The music and the story must continue, and Candela Soul is in the midst of writing and creating new material. Each member follows his or her personal pathway – learning new instruments, meditating on new insights, grappling with new challenges – and always finds that it leads back to the same place: to the unique collaborative sound and state of mind that is… Candela Soul.
