Dan Unger has played music for years in various bands, but his favorite expression is to do it either as a solo acoustic guitarist or with his daughter Juanita. His other daughter Lydia and his wife Dorothy are great fans, too...
A songwriter, producer, and worship leader, Malcolm Petch lives in Kelowna with his wife Donna and their three children. His ''real job'' is producing other people''s music, but he still cranks out his own music from time to time…
Dan & Malcolm have played together in various settings for years, from small intimate living-room acoustic settings to large venues and events where everything is plugged in and loud. Some of their favorite times of playing have been after the regular set is finished and the band is just kicking along in whatever groove and chord progression the last song was in, leaving everyone free to trade off spontaneous solos and melodic themes over the rhythmic foundation already in place (whew! What a long and convoluted sentence!). Malcolm & Dan had often said they''d love to record an album of that type of music, and in 2007 they finally made the decision to let "Into The Myst(ery)" come out of that desire. The album was recorded from January to May of that year and was released in the late fall of 2007 with fuller distribution getting going in 2008.
The album definitely has a relaxation feel to it, with soft pads and textures forming the backdrop to the melodic themes coming from the acoustic guitar and piano. Yet there is a clear rhythmic flow and groove going on with percussion and supporting instruments providing a moving undercurrent propelling the tracks forward. (All that fancy stuff is saying is that this music draws you in quickly and easily when you put it on, and after about 15 seconds of the first track you can start to feel the cares of the day drift away).
Many people have said they honestly feel Peace settle over them as they listen to ‘Into The Myst(ery)’, and they put it on any time they’re looking for an hour of relaxation, refreshment and release.
“Into The Myst(ery)” has been nominated for ‘Instrumental Album of the Year’ in the 30th Annual Covenant Awards for 2008. The Covenant Awards are the Canadian version of the Dove awards, hosted by the Gospel Music Association of Canada. Track two of the CD, ‘Water Dance’, has also been nominated in the category of ‘Instrumental Song of the Year’.
Some of the biggest fans of this CD are busy executives. One sales manager buys ‘Into The Myst(ery)’ in wholesale lots to give away to his clients because he finds himself so re-energized every time he listens to the music. This sales manager told Malcolm that his wife loves the disc as well, and the two of them put the music on when they’re looking for a relaxing evening with friends over a bottle of wine… or for when the two of them are wanting to be alone to pursue more, uh, romantic activities together.
One international speaker based out of Canada has found the CD works very well for him when he is speaking on the benefits of meditation and soaking. After using Into The Myst(ery) in his sessions he began to have people ask where they could buy the CD, so now he buys the disc in wholesale lots to sell when he travels – apparently being ‘instrumental’ really helps cross the language barrier in Korea and other non-English speaking nations!
Besides playing acoustic guitar on Myst(ery), Dan Unger also plays Dobro and e-bow electric guitar on a few tracks. Malcolm Petch supplies the piano for the album but also adds Hammond organ and all the instruments in the “ambient support rhythm and texture groove band” role. Malcolm also produced the overall recording at his Kelowna, BC, based project studio, Escape Artist Music and Motion Inc.
