Singer/producer Christopher Crommett''s «Navidad de mi niñez» (Christmas of My Childhood) celebrates Puerto Rico''s rich customs & heritage, with traditional and newly-composed songs that showcase both tender and soaring vocals, and gorgeous arrangements & orchestrations by Grammy Award-winner Gary Anderson. Styles range from classical oratorio to upbeat Latin, combined into a joyful, inspiring and entertaining musical journey.
Co-produced by Gary Anderson, the 16-track Spanish-language album, with whimsical cover art by noted Puerto Rican artist, illustrator & graphic designer Alberto Mier, includes five well-known Puerto Rican ''aguinaldos'' or ''villancicos'' (such as the poignant "Villancico yaucano"), five universal favorites (including a ravishing instrumental rendition of "The Christmas Song" spotlighting Gary Anderson on tenor saxophone) and six original compositions.
The originals include the opening song "Diciembre, diciembre," an adaptation of a poem by Puerto Rican poet Virgilio Dávila with music in a danzón style by Crommett and the late Puerto Rican humanitarian and composer Gerónimo Lluberas; an arrangement for symphony orchestra, vocal quartet and tenor soloist of Lluberas'' "Aguinaldo del cañaveral"; and four songs with words and music by Crommett: the rousing "Buenas nuevas" (Good News); the playful "La niñita curiosa" (The Curious Little Girl); "Tres misteriosos," an evocative exploration of the legend of the Three Magi; and the upbeat, danceable title track. Listeners will also enjoy fresh takes, in Spanish, on such favorites as "The Little Drummer Boy," "Silent Night," and the Ave Marias by Schubert and Bach-Gounod.
In addition to Gary Anderson on flutes and tenor & baritone saxophones, the album includes contributions from some of Atlanta and Las Vegas'' most outstanding singers and instrumentalists, including flautist Jeanne Carere, cellist Charae Krueger, guitarist Jerry Lopez, pianist Cocho Arbe, and singers Amber Brooke, Jason Hardy, J.J. Hobbs, Carrie Kahl and Graham Kuhn.
