Chris Magennis has composed and arranged music for students he has taught in numerous Primary and Special school settings. Percussion groups, choirs, recorder groups, multi-instrumental groups and whole class groups. He has encouraged children to write their own songs - many have been recorded and some published nationally through the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. This is his first CD of kid’s songs - songs which have been thoroughly tried, tested, modified and ultimately proven to be successful with kids.
Many songs on this CD have been inspired by education themes e.g. WEATHER - The Storm, Hot Hot Hot. CHRISTMAS in drought prone Australia - Rain Dear Santa. OLYMPICS - Olympic Blues. MATHS (Spacial Relations) - Above Below Beside. COMMUNICATION - Message Stick. COLOR - Oh Me! Oh My! etc. The Songs lend themselves to actions, movement, imagination and signing of key words.
All songs have their own unique character. Chris uses play on words, humor, atmosphere, and a variety of styles - Jazz, Blues, Country, Pop, Rock, etc. Teachers may be surprised to find kids handling a song that alternates between 9/4 and 4/4 but Chris has found that kids in a Special School setting had no troubles clapping , singing along and keeping in time to “It Isn’t Fair Chocolate Bear”.
Chris has composed, arranged and recorded all songs. He has performed all vocals, instruments and programming. Cover art by Tania Magennis. Several other projects are in the pipe line - keep your ears out for a mini-musical based on the indigenous story - How Birds Got Their Colors.
A colleague commented to Chris about the strange looks he received from his teenage children when he found himself walking around the house singing about a chocolate teddy bear. Maybe a warning should be added to this CD. KIDS ONLY - ADULTS BEWARE. Oh yeah, one more thing - careful what you dream - you might just make it come true - Oh Me! Oh My!
