Artists biography:
The Polish couple Ewa Jabłczyńska and Dariusz Kupiński made their postgraduate studies at the Universität der Künste in Berlin and Hochschule für Musik in Weimar in the guitar class of prof. Thomas Müller-Pering. They achieved their Master degrees from the Academy of Music in Katowice. As soloists and in a duo they have won numerous awards in national and international competitions (Weikersheim, Parma, Tychy, Viareggio, Bojano, Erwitte). They have been honoured multiple times with prestigious awards and scholarships for artistic achievements, such as “Young Poland” Scholarship, the Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage Scholarship and DAAD.
They have played recitals in Poland, Germany and Italy. Beside realizing their concert schedule, they are teaching guitar – Ewa is sharing her knowledge with students at the Institute of Music of Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa and Dariusz is teaching at the Academy of Music in Katowice and Primary & Secondary Music School in Zabrze.

About the music:
Many of us automatically associate the word „guitar“ with Spain. These associations are though legitimate as both the history of the guitar and the circle of prominent performers indicate the extraordinary role of this country in the development of guitar art. By analysing the repertoire included on the CD, one may come to the conclusion that Spain is considered the country where the origin of the guitar leads to with good cause: such outstanding artists like Albeniz, de Falla or Granados decided to compose pieces for that instrument.
Regrettably, none of them had thought of the guitar as an instrument for expressing their own creative ideas. Only M. de Falla, at the instigation of the Spanish guitarist Miguel Llobet, used that instrument one time only when composing “Homenaje a Debussy” which later on was prepared for an orchestra and included as a part of a bigger series entitled “Homenajes.” What makes then the transcriptions included on the CD “Spanish Music” so enjoyable to listen to? There is a good reason for that. All of the three composers represented the so called Spanish national school. In other words, they sought inspiration in the music folklore of their country and because the guitar is its indispensable element they unavoidably were defeated by the charm of that instrument and so continued using its characteristic tone or its typical treatment.
This is the reason why the transcriptions of the Spanish mentors for the guitar sound so natural. Guitarists willingly retell the anecdote according to which Isaac Albeniz considered his own compositions performed on the guitar by Francisco Tarrego better than its original, piano version. After listening to the very first composition on the CD Asturias or Rumores de la Caleta one may risk the claim that Albeniz owes his reputation of the piano art innovator among other things to the fact that he introduced expressions and techniques characteristic for the guitar music to the piano. A similar conclusion might be reached if one analyses La vida breve or Danza Ritual del Fuego performed by Manuel De Falla.
The least “guitar oriented” from the entire CD may be considered the series “Valses Poeticos” by Enrique Granados. Yet the fashion in which the composer took advantage of the folkloristic elements in his creative output was subtle and veiled too. Nevertheless, the waltzes for two guitars sound magnificent. The sophisticated, colourful sound of the instrument overwhelmingly emphasizes their poetic elements included in the title. Excellent music in an excellent performance - that is what awaits you if you decide to enlarge your music collection with the CD of Ewa Jabłczyńska and Dariusz Kupiński.
