It’s the year 2000 and I’m sleepwalking through my early twenties. I’m completely overwhelmed in life, but I’m still too young to notice. What better time to start a new band?
Several years before, Brent introduced himself at a show my teenage band was playing. I was the bashful lead singer and Justin was the slap-happy bassist. We were playing grunge funk for Christ. Why Brent ever wanted to associate with us after that show, I’ll never know. But he and I kept in touch via e-mail on a near daily basis after that. He attended an Ivy League school on the east coast while the Christian band played a couple hundred shows to a couple dozen people and then broke up. In celebration of the new millennium, Brent drove himself across America to move in with my dad and myself. It was only a matter of days before we met up with Justin and began working on music.
We were working on our first album before we realized we were. Well, we wanted the record to stand out visually as much as we wanted it to stand out aurally… we decided on making an 80-page flipbook. Unfortunately… the finished product was too heavy to ship anywhere outside the US, and too expensive to keep in production for long. By the end of 2008, our first record was sadly out of print.
As I sit here writing this thing a decade after we initially started working on the album, it’s clear that "I Am The Fun Blame Monster!" was never really finalized all these years. We put the record out ourselves in 2003, consigning it at every record store in Portland (and beyond) that would accept it, and selling it online through CD Baby. In 2005, our friend John Askew re-released it on his FILMguerrero label, along with 500 LPs (packaged in an elaborate oversized origami monster designed by Brent, hand screened/assembled by me) to go with it. Barsuk picked it up in 2007 and helped distribute it further. Hopefully this 2011 re-re-re-release will help put the proverbial icing on the proverbial cake.
There’s a lot of stuff in here to process. In the end, it’s all just a little time capsule of three kids messing around with a few ideas and a microphone. We hope you enjoy!
