Details:
“liberty island” is a metaphor for the freedom that music has given Mission Man. It’s not a freedom based in money, but in self. Mission Man loves making music, and has been rapping since 1992. He is self taught on the drums, bass, guitar and keyboard, as well as production, all of which he started doing in 1998 and 1999. This album shows tremendous musical growth for Mission Man over all of his previous albums, and is his best work. Mission Man makes his music without ego, in order to grow.

Music has saved Mission Man’s life several times, including after his mom passed away from cancer in 1994. It also got him through his experiences in Chicago, which culminated in him being robbed at gun point. Music is a major part of why Mission Man was able to work his way through college. Because music has done so much for Mission Man, he is doing everything he can to keep following his dream. This album is very much about the passion that Mission Man has, but that passion does not manifest itself in anger or egotistical lyrics. Instead, he is trying to take the freedom music has given to him and help share it with his fans.

The first track on the album, “wonder” is about our ability to do anything we want to do. “We just need a little love and a lot of help. I believe in you; I hope you believe in yourself.” These kinds of thoughts are constant through the album as well. “living the dream,” explores the changes in Mission Man’s viewpoints. First, as a 13 year old kid who’s a little arrogant about his abilities on the basketball court. This kid thinks he is the best and can do anything without effort. The track then shifts to Mission Man at 16, after he broke his ankle playing basketball. It causes him to reevaluate and realize that while he loves basketball he probably won’t go pro. He’s hoping it will help him pay for college. It then flashes forward to him now, in his early 30s, talking about how his view has matured, and that he is no longer interested in arrogance or who’s the best, but instead who is the most passionate, and most sincere.

“starting over” discusses how “we all need to start over sometime, somewhere. Once there, how do we know where to go?” “living to the rhythm” is a metaphor for trying to find love, told through the perspective of going out for a night.

“i had to” is by far the deepest track on the album, and discusses his mother passing away, him paying his way through college, dropping out of college, falling in love with a girl who didn’t love him back, and ultimately overcoming all of that, thanks in large part to music.

For the rest, you’ll just need to hear for yourself. Mission Man’s drive and passion combine with his very positive outlook on life to create his definitive album.
