This song was originally written and recorded in 1995 for the album the Pop Narcotic. The album was recorded in my bedroom while I was in college in London Ontario. I had a very humble setup with no microphone stand. I used to set the microphone on a table and position myself as close as I could get. This song originally had a full band arrangement. As I was mixing it I started taking more and more instruments out. I ended up taking out everything but the acoustic guitar, bass and vocals. This seemed to accent the haunting vocals and let the bass really stand out. At the time I was experimenting with layering vocals. The voices were each sung as an independent melody, not as a harmony to one another. So when I sang each vocal take I was not listening to the other voices, only to my singular performance. I found this gave the song a sort of schizophrenic effect, where you weren''t sure which voice was really carrying the melody; or if there was a melody. Of course the song originated around the guitar rhythm which is intriguing in itself. It is actually an 18 count, not 16 (4x4) as most songs adhere to. So to count time with it is pretty tricky even for most accomplished musicians. You can count 9x2 or 4x4+2... this gives the song a unique flavor. I remixed the song six months ago to clean it up. It got picked up for a recent episode of the TV show Degrassi and really worked well within the story. Interesting to hear how many young people enjoyed this song considering it was released over 15 years ago. I hope you enjoy it too.
