Susan Sandberg—a.k.a. a girl named “Sioux”—is a singer-songwriter, composer, and “accidental” movie star. A Minneapolis native, Sandberg has been living and working in Los Angeles since the mid 1990s, and her songs are regularly heard in a variety of films and television shows.
There’s just something about Susan, and it all started with There’s Something About Mary, the Farrelly brothers’ 1998 smash. Sandberg met Peter Farrelly shortly after moving to L.A. He heard her perform at the Roxy on Sunset Strip, and they became fast friends.
Sandberg is seen and heard in the Farrelly brothers’ latest film, Hall Pass (2011). Always a go-to music person for the Farrellys, she also fit the bill for a character that needed to be funny and look smart—at the same time. On-camera, she plays an E.R. doctor in a small speaking part with Jason Sudeikis (SNL, 30 Rock). Her song “Days Gone By” enhances the soundtrack.
Sandberg is in two other recent films, including the The Convincer—directed by Jill Sprecher and starring Greg Kinnear and Alan Arkin—which premiered at Sundance in January 2011. She also appears in the Andrew Jarecki-directed All Good Things, which stars Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst.
Musically, Sandberg has drawn comparisons to Aimee Mann, Alanis Morisette and Liz Phair, but her fresh, spirited delivery is distinctly her own. Sandberg’s latest release is the EP Kick, Stick & Shaker (2011), with a track list including the pair of songs featured in Hall Pass. The stripped-down acoustic set—produced by fellow Minnesotan David J. Russ—beautifully spotlights Sandberg’s way with a turn of phrase and knack for strong, memorable hooks.
Sandberg’s most recent album—and third solo release—was Hollywood Wallpaper (2009), with songs including “Screwed Up,” featured in Farrelly film The Heartbreak Kid (2007). Produced in Los Angeles by Sheldon Gomberg, the album features guest players including Jesse Valenzuela (Gin Blossoms), Julie Ritter (Mary’s Danish), and Nashville troubadour Hal Ketchum.
Her debut album, 2000’s Stripping For Jesus, prompted Entertainment Weekly to note, “Susan Sandberg hits all the right sweet tart chords with her expertly produced and played album.” Highlights include “Girl With All The Goodbyes”—also heard on TV in Dawson’s Creek and in the film Late Last Night—and an alternate version of “Hey Batter.” Down Comes The Night followed in 2002. Propelled by poetic flair and infectious pop rhythm, tracks include “Mile High,” heard in the Adam Sandler film Mr. Deeds.
In collaboration, Sandberg has co-written with Valenzuela (six of her songs appear on Gin Blossoms albums), Brian Setzer (Stray Cats), Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate), country combo Trailer Choir (who performed their co-write, “The Bully” at the Grand Ole Opry), and Hal Ketchum. With Valenzuela and Danny Wilde (The Rembrandts), she formed the pop trio Tres Diablos, releasing one album, 2009’s Greatest Hits, Vol. 1. She has also created a satirical concept album about a Runaways-esque all-girl teenage rock band, currently in development as an animated show.
As a live performer, Sandberg has played clubs nationwide, headlined a two-week engagement at the House of Live in Paris, France, and performed a week of shows in a 600-year old barn in a privately owned vineyard in Italy. Now there’s a venue where you really look forward to the drink tickets.
