Alternating between icy guitar-scapes and smoldering keyboards, SAYS fuses lush shoegaze textures and glitchy electronica into atmospheric tracks that won''t recede into the walls. One could imagine SAYS standing in for Bill Pullman''s feverish saxophone playing in David Lynch''s Lost Highway. Signature tracks like “Storm the Idol” and “Disbelieving” pick up where the 90s Bristol trip-hop movement left off, maintaining the intensity of Massive Attack’s “Mezzanine,” but discarding the pretensions of hip-today, quaint-tomorrow clubbiness. A two-man wrecking team, guitarist-vocalist Gerald Sonessa and keyboardist Kjell Nelson open up sonic attacks on their own arrangements. Sonessa’s seemingly well-intentioned verses and Nelson’s shimmery accents find themselves lacerated on a battlefield of Gatling guitars and laser gun keys reminiscent of Brian Eno’s mad scientist warblings before Roxy Music went soft. On stage (which they have shared with keyboardist Ikey Owens of the equally paranoiac Mars Volta), SAYS stays on message, delivering their in-studio demons to a live audience. But SAYS isn’t dark for the sake of darkness. In Sonessa’s brooding tenor there is a sense of wise resignation, that life is worth living – just don’t let your expectations get the better of you. If SAYS was a body, there wouldn’t be an emo bone in it. Shunning gloomy adolescent muck, Sonessa is more like a confident pilot, navigating us through psychological turbulence and soaring over Himalayan heights of sound.
