valiumspeed - the story
melancholy pop songs, in the tradition of singer/songwriters
such as jeff buckley, nick drake or elliott smith, that''s the essence of the
formation valiumspeed, built around singer and band leader dani stoller.
he is on an eternal search for the perfect pop song (but secretly hopes
never to find it ...).it must be short and intuitive, coming directly from and for
the soul. Then bring the red wine and a burning candle.
Time for the feast ...
dani formed valiumspeed in 1998 with musicians from RagMamaRag
and the guitarrist/singer k-cee from the companion band mas
a tierra, and then they produced the debüt-cd «this shit hits». A mix of electronic
rhythms and warm guitar - as if massive attack were playing nick drake songs. on
the follow up swiss tour, the band opened for amongst others, the go-betweens.
in 1999 the music had matured, the electronics and half of the band were
sacked. In the same year the ep «songs for lovers» was recorded.
a soft acoustic pop album in the classical singer/songwriter style.
in autumn 2000 stoller, k-cee and bass player daniel alexander
- along with stoller, the last member from the RagMamaRag time - brought
the guitarist mathias bieri, from the fribourg postrock band bela
and the drummer baldï b. (mas a tierra) into the band.
with this lineup a number of gigs were played, new songs were crafted
and this led to the creation of the current valiumspeed sound.
a lot of guitar and beautiful harmonies, complete with a hip swing inducing
rhythmn down below.
in summer 2002 the album «ain''t love grand» was recorded.
a gorgeous piece piece of music between melancholy and
and romantic. love, again and again love. thats what keeps the world
alive. that''s also the message of the single «perfectly you» and also of the videoclip
for the song. in november 2003 stoller was able to fulfill a long open wish, to record a
purely acoustic album. «digitalfolk» is the name of this mini-album and guarantees
shivers of pleasure for the listener, with the assistance of vreni stadelmanns
magical guest vocals. the cd is exclusively available at https://www.tradebit.com. reto
burrell has covered the vs song «spell on me» on his acoustic album «roses fade
blue» and has pushed the song onto many european radio playlists.
april 2004: a lot of enthusiastically recieved concerts have been played,
an extremely fruitful studio visit announces the next album, titled «evergreen
ballroom» it comes over as even more playful, more multi-dimensional and
hypnotic. «completely wrong» is the name of the single and its more
than completely right!
hard to believe, but valiumspeed have so to say quadratically trumped
themselves. the songs are of a piece, they have won in urgency,
the band plays perfectly but like a sleep walker, and if that doesn''t sound
like too much of a good thing, there are already a host of new song pearls
already in the live set, and one or the other of these will be tested during the
coming gigs!
in concert dani stollers voice, which can really get under your skin, stands in
the middle point, flanked by multiple backing vocals, three guitars,
flowing bass lines, hypnotic drums and just now and again thunderous noise.
