Press Quotes on The Vestals:

4 out of 5 stars
"Remember when the likes of Jellyfish and XTC led us via oblique passages through the outer regions of Pepperland? Well, The Vestals, a four-piece headed by brothers Ben and Jeremy Gordon, are the new tour guides.” Fred Dellar, Mojo Magazine

"Minnesotans the Vestals bring an impressively vast array of influences baffling any observer as to whether they may qualify as post-punk, post-alternative, post-new wave, or just plain post-everything!” Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide

“…their all-encompassing rhythmic drive and the naked energy that fuels their songs has no parallel yet known to man.” CD Baby

“Songwriting brothers Jeremy and Ben Gordon could accurately be described as the Jon Brion and Jason Falkner of the Twin Cities…” Amplifier Magazine

A Standardized Test on the History of The Vestals (TRUE or FALSE)

1. If Gary Busey ran for president, The Vestals would not only support him with their votes, but would volunteer to be the pied pipers of his campaign, skipping and fluting their way from town to town with Gary and his masses jogging behind them. (T/F)

2. One day, Ben was fired from a Dairy Queen. Not only that, but later that day he called the shift manager posing as the owner, and demanded that the sign outside read, “It’s Jimmy’s (owner’s son) Birthday! Free Hamburgers!” He and his friends may have even enjoyed a few of those tasty burgers themselves! (T/F)

3. Every Tuesday evening, Mark rewards himself with a refreshing glass of White Zinfandel upon completing the daily crossword puzzle. (T/F)

4. Jeremy has only one kidney. His sister, Molly, has the other. (T/F)

5. The Vestals were formerly named, The Vestal Sturgeons. (T/F)

6. As a junior in high school, Jeremy accepted $10 from a fellow student to approach an unwitting male substitute teacher and sing, “I Touch Myself” while dancing suggestively. (T/F)

7. Once while on tour, The Vestals were pulled over after smoking a few joints. In response to the officer’s repeated statement, “It smells strongly of marijuana in here”, Ben replied, “It smells like a lot of things in here. We just drove through Colorado and probably just picked up some of the scent along the way.” Not only that, but the boys got off without even a speeding ticket. (T/F)

8. Ben and Jeremy started out as puppeteers in a traveling puppet show. Their creative additions to the script, including a Lynch-esque reenactment of episode #43 of Murder She Wrote, got them fired and ultimately led them to starting a band. (T/F)

9. After meeting Clay Aiken and discovering that he’s actually a racist, womanizing, dwarf-hater, Mark briefly lost all hope in humanity and threatened to quit the band. (T/F)

10. Ben and Jeremy were contacted by one of the recruiters of Star Search and never called him back. (T/F)

Seriously:

The Vestals are a dynamic and inventive four-piece rock band fronted by brothers Ben and Jeremy Gordon (both providing vocals and guitar), with Mark Weigle on bass and a revolving slew of great drummers including Noah Levy (Honeydogs, Five for Fighting, Golden Smog). Both brothers were individually awarded a John Lennon Songwriting prize and have been writing and recording music since as far back as they can remember. The Vestals vast pile of critical acclaim for their self-titled debut album helped them earn four Minnesota Music Award nominations including rock album of the year. Their brand new album, “Songs About Girls…and other mysteries” was produced by Jason Orris (Soul Asylum, Jayhawks, Golden Smog) and is being released by Warming House Records on May 6, 2006.
