Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Bitchy Boy play a fat, funky mix of catchy songs underpinned by bitchin'' guitar-based grooves.
Fronted by Mark Hughes on vocals/guitar (PBS FM Festival of Song 2003 Grand Finalist) with Michael Matthews on bass and Paul Richards on drums, Bitchy Boy have gigged consistently on the Melbourne live scene since they formed in 2001.
Venues played at include The Corner Hotel, The Espy, The Evelyn Hotel, Revolver, 9th Ward, The Dan O''Connell, The Duke Of Windsor, Pony, St. Kilda Inn and The Perseverance Hotel.
Notable supports include Matt Walker, Dan Brodie, Mark Seymour and Ross Wilson.
The strong songs and musicianship of the band give Bitchy Boy the versatility to play a range of different venues, including bigger venues and more intimate acoustic settings.
Solo acoustic gigs played by Mark include venues such as The Corner Hotel, Revolver Upstairs, The Espy, Hardiman''s Hotel and The Royal Derby Hotel.
Bitchy Boy successfully launched their debut EP, Time Thief in September 2003 at Manchester Lane (Melbourne city) with an 8-piece band, playing to a full house with queues outside.
In Jan 2004, Bitchy Boy staged ''Planet Bitchy'' at The Corner Hotel (once more with the 8-piece lineup) to bitchin'' feedback from the street press and punters alike.
In 2004 several tracks from the Time Thief EP were played repeatedly on new extreme sports TV show, ''Cactus Garden'' on Network 10, a national broadcaster.
With the Time Thief EP out now through The Elements Music, Bitchy Boy are gearing up for a big year with plans to pursue airplay, festival gigs, regional tours and high profile supports.

BITCHY BOY
Friday 30 January, Corner Hotel
Planet Bitchy was the theme for Bitchy Boy''s big night at the Corner Hotel and fans weren''t disappointed by a show that turned into an absolute intergalactic funkathon.
Michelle Parsons opened with a blues driven guitar and a big engaging voice and was immediately followed by local hard boys Flathead.
It was an interesting mix of musical genres, if not altogether complimentary to Bitchy Boy''s brand of funky whiteboy soul.
After a break between Flathead and Bitchy Boy, Mark Hughes (lead vocals/guitarist) and Ashley Smith (bass) performed two songs as a duo, including an excellent version of Robert Johnson''s Crossroads.
Just when the momentum was building, they confused me by leaving the stage!
Some time later they returned with an opening curtain flourish and with the full brass section and fellow bandmates Jenni James(backing vocals) Jeff Shepherd(keyboards) and drummer Paul Richards.
Fortunately, the momentum that had been building since Flathead''s seriously rocking set recovered when they opened with the freshly penned (written just for this show, I''m told) rave up Planet Bitchy.
Augmented by the excellent Eugene Ball''s trumpet work, Jordan Murray''s trombone and Ian Whitehurst on sax, the band tipped its collective lid to the fine funk of Sly & The Family Stone.
From there they rocked into tunes from their Time Thief EP including the excellent Describe The Sun and the latin influenced vibe of Surrender, which featured knockout keyboard work from Shepherd and sparked some frenzied dancing in the crowd.
The mighty bass work of Ashley Smith made Clark Gable a crowd pleaser while Into You was a libido driven musical bonanza, with Hughes at his most charismatic and the horns at their sexiest.
The set closed with the epic Black Day, which worked as a showcase vehicle for Hughes'' considerable vocal talents and some terrific guitar work.
All up, it was, well...bitchin!

BITCHY BOY - Time Thief
Time Thief includes six original songs penned by Bitchy Boy lead singer/guitarist Mark Hughes that vary in style and range from high energy funk and manic guitar driven romps to moody acoustic pieces.
Bassist Ashley Smith and drummer Paul Richards complete the 3 piece''s line up and provide the funky, chunky thumps and bumps along the way.
The smooth grooving and instantly hooky opening track Clark Gable reads like a paranoid and possibly drug enhanced reworking of the old princess and frog fairytale with lyrics like: I''ve got a sleeping pill and a cigarette/And I''m trying hard to remember to forget/The phone''s off the hook, the hook''s off the wall/I''m hanging like Ned Kelly in a shopping mall/Won''t you ride my horse inside your stable/Wear me like a warning label/Kiss me like a frog prince/I''ll be your Clark Gable.
This track also features Paul Williamson''s agile saxophone and trumpets by Greg Spence and Eugene Ball.
In fact, a couple of tracks on this EP feature some quality brass, which gives it a bit of extra weight and funk.
Inmate sees Hughes at his bitchiest with urgent vocals complimenting the excellent guitar work on this track while Surrender bossa novas right into your head and urges you to dance, dance, dance!
Describe The Sun takes a page right out of Steely Dan''s early catalogue and ends up rewriting the story and finding the groove that was missing from most of that band''s later work.
Judging a band by their first EP is risky, but Bitchy Boy sounds like a band to go the distance.

Bitchy Boy "Time Thief" EP independent
This is a good Melbourne band that has been very active over the past eighteen months in building a profile around the suburban pub scene.
Lead singer and songwriter is Mark Hughes, and he''s written songs of various moods and styles, just in these six tracks.
It showcases a band full of energy and funk-flavoured textures. The songs have a smooth flow and there are plenty of hooks that warrant attention.
Track 5 is probably the highlight. "Describe The Sun" - smooth, laid-back and cruisey, it appeals for the fine vocal structures.
Guest instrumentalists are brought in for brass moments. All the vocals and instruments complement each other in cohesive fashion.
