Review in Classical Guitar Magazine July 2005:

Carl Herring
Falcon Records FAL512

Fresh from the Royal Academy of Music, where he won the Julian Bream Prize, the young English guitarist Carl Herring has wasted no time in issuing his first CD, and it is remarkably good. A mixed bag, somewhat like the portfolio of work carried around by arts graduates looking for employment, it shows what this highly accomplished guitarist can do, and I have the feeling we shall be hearing a lot more of him.

Contemporary English, German Baroque and 20th-century Spanish is not a bad cross-section to show off to prospective impresarios, promoters and purchasers. His athletic performance of Berkeley’s Sonatina, which so impressed me in the Ivor Mairants Award – which he won – is faithfully reproduced here, and is followed by Turina’s Fandanguillo, played with a glowing tone and a rubato that has almost Segovian overtones, the urgent passion at the very end is his alone.

Herring’s Bach at first sounds grand and a little emphatic, as if he had a cathedral to fill with sound. He soon settles down to a clean linear style that pulls you along with the music, with a youthful urgency that is very attractive.

The recording is warm yet clear: always a happy combination. It does justice to this first CD by a very promising newcomer.
