Bill Briare & ChanneLight FAQ

Q. What kind of music is it?
A. It''s great music! That’s always one of the hardest questions to answer. We have many musical influences and when you listen to ChanneLight you will hear Rock, Progressive, Latin, African, Israeli, Irish, Pop, Brazilian, Ska and many other types of sounds. The lyrics range from satire to spiritual wonderings and masked political commentary. In a word, it’s eclectic.

Q. What type instruments are on this CD?
A. Lead Vocal,Backup Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Acoustic 12-String, Bass, Lead Guitar, Electric Rhythm Guitar, Drums, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, Congas, Djembe, Synths, Mandolin, Oud, Double Bass, Ukelele, Lead Acoustic Guitar, Surdo, Cuica, Violin, Flute, Ranat-Ek, Slide Guitar, Didgeridoo, Egg, Shekere, Bell, Misc. Percussion, Bamboo Reed Flute, Cajon, Banjo, Hammered Dulcimer, Dumbek, Tabla, Mbira (Not all at the same time!)

Q. In an overview, what can we expect from this CD that we haven''t heard on your others?
A. Well, there’s an oud, a ranat-ek, and an mbira! Actually, this collection has a much wider soundscape then other previous ones and a few more musical styles but you’ll definitely recognize the ChanneLight sound.

Q. When did ChanneLight making music and where did that name come from?
A. The original group started in the mid-80’s and personnel have changed over the years. The band has always been fluid with more members for some shows and other times performing as even a duo. The name ChanneLight came in the middle of the night in a dream and suggest bringing positive light and music to the world.

Q. How many albums have you released?
A. This is the 10th album of music released by Bill under various names. It is the third under the ChanneLight name with Questions and Welcome to the Planet being the other two. Bill has also released several albums of children’s music.

Q. How many musicians played on The Meeting of the Soul, the newest album?
A. 25 musicians and a Middle School Choir took part in various parts of the album production.

Q. How many songs are on the album?
A. There are 15 original songs on the album.

Q. It was over six years ago since you released Welcome to the Planet. What took so long to finish this one?
A. We released Welcome to the Planet on New Year’s Eve 1999 at a big celebration at the DoubleTree Inn on the Columbia River. It was a great way to bring in the new millennium. I already had the basic tracks to many of the songs for this collection started and then other projects came up for me to work on. I released several children’s albums from songs written at my son’s school. 9/11 happened and influenced my songwriting for awhile and I produced several storytelling albums for my friend Will Hornyak and a surf album for Bob Misley. Coupled with travel around the world, time for recording was limited. Those events coupled with being in a new position at work made my time for working on this album longer. The music benefited by having new people come into my life and having them play tracks on the album too.

Q. I would like to know what type of CD is it...is it getting ready to go out fired up music, is it sit in the bath with a glass of wine music, is it dancing music?
A. There is a little bit of everything. You can crank a few up and get fired up and then sit in the bath for a few. Nothing meditative though.

Q. I would also like to know if words will be included with the CD, I am very visual and like to follow along!
A. No, unfortunately there was no room to put lyrics on the inside jacket because there was so much room taken up to list all the instruments and musicians. And an 8-page booklet was just getting too costly. I did however mix so that you could understand the lyrics because they are the most fun and if you want I will send you the lyrics so you can “visualize” the words we are singing.

Q. Any surprises in store for your listeners?
A. Yes

Q. Are there some catchy tunes I can put on my work-out IPod?
A. Yes.

Q. With so many musicians and so many instruments, how were you able to organize and keep track of all the recordings and bits?
A. I keep track notes on a 64 grid chart and name every take. I store all the song files in their own envelope and backup to a separate hard disk. The Sony Vegas system has a great interface for storing “takes” underneath each other to keep track of them throughout the process.

Q. Were songs written for certain instruments or were the instruments added as the song developed?
A. Most of the songs started out as guitar/voice and then instruments are added as musicians join in the songwriting. Many songs were developed with particular instruments in mind and some of the instruments (like the Hawaiian Uke) were purchased just to add to a particular song.

Q. How many hours of work does it take to write, perform, produce, edit, mix and record a typical 4 minute long ChanneLight song?
A. This is a tough one to estimate because the process has been happening for six years and each song requires more or fewer people to finish. I’d say a rough estimate for a 4 minute song would be about 40 hours, 10 hours a minute…yeah that seems about right.

Q. Can I download this CD music to an Ipod or perhaps one of the other more superior non-Apple media devices?
A. Yes on all accounts.

Q. Is the cd going to be mixed in dubley?
A. Yes, we used double dubley.

Q. Will there be any hidden bonus tracks.
A. I don’t know. If they were hidden I couldn’t find them.

Q. Will Channelight release an 8-track tape version?
A. Yes, if I can get my old 8-track player running in time. How old are you anyway?

Q. Does Channelight play live shows?
A. Yes, the last show was a Breedlove festival (Breedlove is the brand of my guitar) and the next show is a Pirate Extravaganza in April. We are looking to have our own TV show where we play a few songs each week and try out young singers till we find one that will make us famous.
