THE COYOTE HILL BAND BIO
Coyote Hill is not just another acoustic band of veteran players and rising young talent from the Gold Country of the Central Sierra foothills of California. Their Americana music is a mix of original and diverse styles that include but not limited to; Celtic, folk, bluegrass, blues, jazz, western swing and folk rock. With such a variety of styles it’s almost like having a mini music festival all in one band.
COYOTE HILL was founded by vocalist/ multi-instrumentalist, Julie Schmidt and singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Richard Sholer.
Julie Schmidt is a recent graduate from the Conservatory of Music at the University of the Pacific where she received a degree in piano performance. Her singing voice is strong, energetic and angelic. She grew up in a musical family with four sisters and has played the fiddle since she was eight years old and she also plays the trumpet. It’s rare to find someone who can go from fiddle to trumpet but Julie does a very fine job of it, as demonstrated on Be it jazz, old and Blue and Bei Mir bist Du Schoen.
Richard Sholer plays guitar, dobro, mandolin, harmonica and writes most of the songs for the group. He was the founder of the all original group Springfield Crossing and is known for his songwriting and champion flatpicking abilities. Seven of the twelve songs are his own compositions where he demonstrates a talent for diversity in styles ranging from jazz, swing and blues to folk rock and bluegrass.
The two were soon joined by banjo player, guitarist and vocalist Dick Todd. Dick has had a few bands of his own, from Colorado and Southern California to New Zealand. Besides being a good banjo player, he has a great lead singing voice as demonstrated on the Coal Tattoo and Only in my Dreams. Recently he has introduced some of his original material to the band that will be featured on their next recording.
Lawrence Drummond plays the upright and fretless bass sings harmony on the debut album from Coyote Hill. Having a strong musical backround , he helps with arrangements, teaches and also plays mandolin, guitar, jaw harp and cittern.

Their debut C. D. “COYOTE HILL,” has only been out for two weeks and is already receiving some attention from promoters and community radio stations. They have just been booked into the 2007 Spring Strawberry Music Festival as well as many other fine events and venues.
Good attitudes and good music lead to good things for Coyote Hill, a band worth listening to.

NEW COYOTE HILL CD
Some are bouncy, lighthearted songs that are on the humorous side of love and relationships in general, others a little more serious with depth, and some just a lot of fun to listen to and to play.

1. Be it Jazz Old and Blue, was inspired by actual events and from listening to the Western Swing /Hillbilly Jazz music of Bob Wills and Dan Hicks.
https://www.tradebit.coml Tattoo, Bluegrass version of a folk song about the life of a coal miner.

https://www.tradebit.com mir bist Du Schoen, Early Jazz, introduced to the band by Julie. An old song popularized by the Andrew Sisters.
4. John Riley, Traditional English folk song, beautifully sung by Julie Schmidt.

5. Lonely Nights and Bright Headlights has more of a folk rock flavor, written after weeks of working out of town, while driving home on a rainy night.
6. I’ve Just seen a Face, a fun Beatles tune played in the bluegrass style.
7. Magic Hands is a heartfelt folk song dedicated to the memory of Annette Hart and Melissa “Mo” Stevenson, and their place in the circle of life in which we live.

8. Only in my Dreams, Another fun song with a more modern theme played in the old delta blues style of Robert Johnson, mixed with a little blues grass. The song features the vocals of Dick Todd and Julie Schmidt and Richard fills in with Dobro and harmonica.

9. Whiskey Creek is a bluesy, bluegrass, backwoods country kind of song that was inspired by the seasonal creek that runs through Richard’s own backyard and is the site of a former gold mining claim. “ I looked out my window one dark, cold and rainy day and could see 150 years into the past, from a gold miner’s perspective. Now they had it tough.”
10. Over the Rainbow, a song everybody knows, but not like this. Dick kicks it off with the bluegrass banjo then Julie sings a fabulous version of it.

11. The Black Hawk Swing, gypsy swing flavor influenced by the music of Django Rhinehart and Stefan Grapelli, one of their most popular and fun songs.

12. My Way Home, This is another favorite Coyote Hill song to some. Julie sings and plays piano on this one while the boys back her up on banjo, guitar and dobro. The message is plain, simple and universal, a beautiful song.
