Saxophonist, Pianist, Composer

Born in La Jolla, California, this composer, educator, and saxophonist acknowledges and respects music’s ability to move and transform energy. It is with passion and love that
Daniel continues to be a living legend.

Known in Japan as the mysterious Mr. Jackson, Daniel represents the essential fibers in
the culture of modern jazz. After establishing a legacy of creative relationships with the
likes of the late Ray Charles, Wes Montgomery, and Cannonball Adderley, Daniel
emerges to the forefront as a unique and much needed voice in music and art.

Daniel has traveled the world as a performer and has been recognized for his virtuosity
by the California Arts Council, City of San Diego, and San Diego Music Awards.

This multi-talented individual has dedicated his life to the magic of music.

A jazz musician whose career as a performer and composer of hauntingly beautiful
African-American music spans fifty years, whose work with greats from Ray Charles to
Art Farmer is a testament to his stature, whose tenacity in the face of hard times is
legendary, and whose grace and passion inform every note he breathes to life through his
horn. When Daniel Jackson creates music, it is soul music, at once profoundly spiritual
and deeply physical.

The first thing you notice is his stillness. Daniel begins to play in total concentration, in
holy communication with the space he occupies, with silence, sound, other musicians-
living and dead, present and absence-with instant and eternal time. To witness his
approach to music is to witness the summoning of tummo, of spirit fire. Then you hear
and feel that tone.

Right away, you’re bound to notice how cool Daniel Jackson is: a soft spoken guy who
lets his music do most of the talking. He smiles warm and sly from beneath some badass
chapeau, maybe a slick cowboy hat; perhaps his eyes are obscured by pitch-black moon
shades; he might be wearing a slick leather blazer or a sharp suit. He is humble,
intellectual, mysterious. Listen to what he is saying with his horn. His solos are lovely,
profound, engaging, logical, timeless.

You should know that this man is living jazz history: Daniel’s 1959 and 1960 Pacific and
Riverside recordings with Lenny McBrowne (featuring Jackson’s original compositions)
are considered classics of the genre and have recently been reissued by EMI. His
performing credentials reads like a list of some of the greatest jazz artists of all time: he
has worked in the bands of Jimmy Smith, Buddy Rich, Willie Bobo, Art Farmer and Ray
Charles. Mr. Jackson has won numerous awards from the likes of the California Arts
Council and City of San Diego: performed as a guest artist with the San Diego
Symphony; and has taught music in high schools, colleges, and in his famous public
workshops. We know Jackson best for his tenor playing, but he is also adept at flute and
piccolo, a gifted and lyrical self-taught pianist, and talented arranger and composer.

A stellar ensemble of friends-some of Southern California’s finest musicians-join Daniel
in the studio for these recording and turn out inspired performances, clearly glowing in
the light of Daniel’s fire. Daniel has released four independent CD’s under Daniel
Jackson , “Life is but a dream,”-“LA Uprising, “Milky Way” and Out the Window” a joy for fans who have been waiting for years to appreciate his recordings, and a lucky break for music lovers everywhere.
