Hailing from completely opposite suburbs of Chicago, Fitzgerald and Griff met through mutual friends who worked at the Metro, a popular Northside venue. Based on a common love for hip-hop, they bonded immediately, and formed J-Direct.
After releasing his debut L.P., the soul-searching I Am Haunted By Waters, Fitzgerald, the outspoken front man, sought to make a Chicago anthem record.
Once he put the word out that he was looking for producers to work with, a friend played him one of Griff’s tracks. Instantly impressed with the raw and grimey style, Fitzgerald became eager to meet the man behind the production. Fresh from working on the highly anticipated, Order Sixty-Six, E.P. with East Coast-MC So-Say, Griff was thirsty to produce more music. As soon as the two connected and began collaborating on ultimate anthem album, Live & J-Direct, they immediately started what would soon become the J-Direct movement.
On Live & J-Direct, the duo works magic, blending Fitzgerald’s catchy hooks and witty remarks with Griff''s organic, bass-driven production. From the dance-inspiring latin feel of the first single, “Clap/Twerk” to the introspective “Hand Be Free,” Live & J-Direct pulls in influences from all types of hip-hop while remaining true to their own unique sound. They strive to create a fresh dynamic that pushes the envelope further than any other Chicago hip-hop record.
The duo has one simple goal for this record—to get all Chicago heads nodding in unison. Expressing much concern Fitzgerald states, “There’s too much segregation in Chicago- culturally, geographically, musically- everything. J-Direct is that one thing that all Chicagoans agree on. We bring all four sides of Chicago together.”
