THEIR ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTS
Even though a computer can generate sounds, it cannot reproduce the nuances of human expression; nor can it make judgments for improvements and changes before, during, and after performances. With their electronic string and wind instruments, Tim and Maggie are able to take electronic music to a new level of expression. Tim’s primary instruments are two electric guitars. His Rickenbacker 12-string can produce sounds difficult to imitate on a 6-stringed guitar. His Les-Paul 6-string is equipped with a GR midi output device that allows access to sounds otherwise unattainable with guitar alone. Several pedals add to the variety of effects. Maggie’s instrument is a Yamaha WX5 midi wind controller. It’s fingering system is similar to a saxophone’s, while it’s range extends over 7 octaves. It is extremely responsive to breath pressure which allows for a large dynamic range, and it can access any sound they can program into their tone generators.
THE CATEGORY LABEL
Their music doesn’t quite fit the labels of “techno” or “electronica” because of the absence of percussive loops. For the most part, Tim & Maggie feel that “music is music”, but they finally settled on the label “Techno-Folk” for their electronic music, a term first jokingly coined by Paul Stookey.
INFLUENCES
The key factors that prompted Tim to write electronic compositions were his electronic music training at CCM and art-performers who avoided anything written after the 19th century. (Electronic/computer generated music does not need to rely much on reticent musicians.) Shortly after receiving his doctorate, he became captivated with the 5 string banjo, which led him to meet Pete Seeger. Pete encouraged him to use his talents to connect with people, which has been his primary reason for composing and performing, both electronic and acoustic, since that time. His earlier works show the harmonically complex and less tonal aspects of 20th century art composition, while his more recent compositions bridge the gap between art and pop. Other influences for his recent compositions include his own background in strings, folk and jazz music, and Maggie’s background in woodwinds and Celtic music.
BACKGROUNDS
Tim Mainland was educated at the University of California at Santa Barbara, the Université de Bordeaux, and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He studied composition with Peter Fricker, Lukas Foss, Scott Huston and Paul Palombo. He became Professor of Music at Concord University in 1978, where he has been a prolific composer and teaches music theory, composition, classical guitar, and classic banjo. His compositions include works for symphony orchestra, string quartet, wind ensemble, piano, flute, guitar, and banjo, but he has focused on electronic music for the past 6 years. Tim is a member of the American Banjo Fraternity, and the College Music Society.
Maggie Jusiel began her education at the University of South Florida, and completed her Bachelors degree in music education at Concord University in 1998. She taught in the WV public school system from 1999 to 2003, and has taught private lessons in winds and strings since 1990. She also tunes pianos in Southern WV and parts of VA. Maggie is a member of the Piano Technicians Guild, the American Banjo Fraternity, and the Music Educators National Conference.
