In addition to describing the President’s summer reading list, ec-a-lec-tic is also the name of the first, full-length recording from Austin, Texas’ Surrender Avenue. For this recording, Surrender Avenue have drawn inspiration from a broad tapestry of musical influences --- The Beatles to Wilco, Radiohead to Johnny Cash, The Cure to Steve Earle --- to fashion a stylistically diverse collection of songs reflecting the character of a band that hates being pigeonholed into any one label or genre. From the guitar-driven beat of “Beautiful Waste”, the country-tinged balladry of “Around”, the keyboard-driven pop of “A Matter of Fact”, and the garage blast of “Burning Baby Blue”, ec-a-lec-tic reflects this character. Produced and recorded by Surrender Avenue in their home studio, and released in March, 2007, on the bands own Hamhands Recordings imprint, ec-a-lec-tic is a snapshot of a band starting to find its voice after a year of rehearsing, recording, and performing.
Formed in the fall of 2005, Surrender Avenue combines the talents of Eric Bangle (vocals, guitar, and keyboards), James Kyle (drums, percussion, mandolin, and vocals), Billy Thogersen (bass, vocals) and Jason Kautz (guitar).
