17 Speedhead once had to sleep in their van in a Toronto parking lot. They left without paying that morning, so they could get something to eat. When it comes to the three hard rock musicians in 17 Speedhead who hail from small town Saskatchewan, the closer to the truth you get, the more it seems like fiction.
Gerald Brisson, his brother Maurice, and Justin Cooney have traveled the greater part of their country in search of something bigger with their music. With a sound that crosses between the edginess of Thornley, and the attitude of Danko Jones, you also have the feeling that this band could have done well in the Seattle grunge scene.
With rock star attitude written all over him, Gerald Brisson may come off as cocky; the reality is that he is bursting with energy that is hard for any performer to match. Far from ego, the front man/guitarist is consumed with bettering himself as an artist, and is more than happy when anyone is willing to come along for the ride.
Maurice Brisson is a tough person to read, leaving many people wondering what he’s all about. His on-stage persona is all about business. With harmony vocals that can make you shiver, he also delivers conciseness on the drums that hasn’t been seen very often since Jon Bonham.
The quiet-shy type that girls cling onto; Justin Cooney has a lot to say when he’s playing the five strings of his bass guitar. Handling all of the low end for 17 Speedhead, Justin has catered himself into being a solid player with operative performances. Musically, when it appears to be a difficult task for most people, this is the guy that can legitimately make it look easy. This band has played nearly 1000 shows and counting. Their music is available for purchase on every major download site, and they have been featured on The Bear’s “Red, White, and New” show (100.3 Edmonton) and Q98''s “Homegrown” (97.9 North Battleford)
These guys have an affinity for knowing the in’s and out’s of the music industry and the business of what it takes to succeed. Self-promoted, self-taught, and independently funded, they have not given up music because of the rejection of others. Their passion and desire to succeed at their goals will almost definitely ensure that you are going to hear more about this band well into the future.
